Slime Rancher

Slime Rancher

Disappointed in the VR version.
A very disappointing VR experience and sadly unlike the pancake version there is really nothing to do here apart from wander around.
The pancake version of Slime Rancher is amazing and has overwhelming positive reviews but this standalone experience is a wasted opportunity.
Having VR for over 2 years now I had high hopes for this game in VR but sadly it's very disappointing and just a basic sandbox.
The developers obviously have the engine working in VR so for the life of me I cannot understand why they didn't allow VR in the FULL game?
This VR version feels like a shell of it's former self, it's cut-down and lacklustre.
A friend of mine and his son are big fans of the pancake version, as soon as they found out they couldn't build a farm, and farm slimes in VR they simply said.... "Nope!"
A shame the developers didn't take a leaf out of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice book.

I mean, it was advertised as a Sandbox for the longest time that I can remember...
Can't see how you could misinterpret that for a full game...

I use sandbox lightly, it's not even that... you cannot build, farm, hunt... all you can do is observe.

I just watched the trailer.
I really wonder what made you think that there would be anything that is obviously not presented there.
Observation, interaction, minigames.
Not farming, building or hunting shown.

And it's for free... so...

Only FREE if you already own the game, a lot of people will be getting the game for the VR version and will be very disappointed.
A lot of these types of experiences are frowned upon by the VR community (just like the Diablo Immortal fiasco) and classed as half-backed experiences.
It's like going into your favourite coffee shop, seeing all the cakes on display and being told, "Sorry no cakes, for you!"
Almost everyone I know who have tried this experience in VR have all been disappointed so far.
Don't get me wrong, the world is gorgeous and amazing and the slimes look cool but as it stands it's a wasted opportunity.
ALSO... the normal 'flatscreen' is Amazing, it's just a shame we can't play THAT version in VR!

Hellblade did it right and now we have one the best VR games available.

They listed the features, and from what I know they those. All I'm saying here is if the disappointment came from them not meeting your expectations, there is little to base those expectations off of.

Payday 2 VR was free, why can't they follow a good example?
Saying that its "free" is a lazy way to dismiss an argument. It isn't free, its a free addon, you still need slime rancher for it to work.

As Decay said...It's only free of you own the current game.

Now I do own the game (my kids play it) but I've never played it personally till the VR patch and it looks nice but it's not a "game" and to be honest..I didnt even know what to do but my kid says there is no game there so thats all I have to go by.

There is an argument to be made in favour of people like myself who where confused as to what this was. Other games that got free VR updates where the full games. Pay Day 2, The Forrest, Assetto Corsa,Zaccaria Pinball etc. All got updated to work in VR. From a consumer point of view, it makes sense that most of us waiting on the VR aspect where expecting the game itself (and I'm sure that will be done eventually). There are people out there who will see the VR DLC expansion and just assume it's the full game and purchase on that. It;s not like everyone reads the fine print each and every time.

Personally I can say I have bought games just because of the VR support (but Slime wasnt one of them).

To repeat this again, the DLC is not "free". It;s only free if you own the base game and that is going to upset a few people who buy it just because they'll think it's full "VR support" for the game rather than a stand alone sandbox to explore.

I will stress though. I do appreciate the dev at least dabbling in VR and I dont mind paying for the full game re-made in VR if thats what it takes....but I wont lie, I am a little dissapointed I didnt get to try the actual game in VR. The Sandbox I explored did look really nice (though there are a few issues). I got what I paid for which was a desktop game for my kids. I'm just going to end this by saying I hope we get a full VR version because it "looks" like the game is a perfect fit for VR.

Games are not always going to be what you may expect them to be. But you are right. It is extremely overhyped

A friend of mine now has his VR video out, he's completed the normal 'pancake' game with his son numerous times and LOVES IT. He also said all the DLC has been amazing.
Sadly he also agrees with me 100% on the VR version and he's hoping it's just a tester, and that the devs will see the light and allow us to experience this amazing FULL game in VR.

In the actual Slime Rancher, you cannot interfere with slimes other than colliding hitboxes. sucking them up, or spitting them out. In the VR DLC, it'd be hard to make a working replica so quickly or make it sufficient enough to appease you. I cannot imagine completely reworking all of the base game's features for free DLC that is being put ahead of scheduled updates. (Free, in that, you won't want to play it without having the base game.)

I'm just going to summarize what the other guy said, but he had a lot of well thought out points:
Unity has tools for easily implementing VR, its not that hard (I've ported my own work to VR, its easy). Payday 2 is a great example of how to do a VR addon correctly, and not a VR port. Interacting with everything is just polish that shows the time you spent mastering VR. Its not a mandatory thing, but just something like lens flares, or dynamic lighting, it just adds to the experience.

IMO, I see this a lot with VR and non-VR people interacting, is that the non-VR people just don't understand how easy it is to implement VR. Unity and Unreal both have support for it, and make it really easy with their pre-built stuff, all you have to do is a bit of easy tweaking in order for the UI to properly worok in VR. I'm not saying you shouldn't have an argument, but try to understand is that VR is still in its infancy, there are not as many ground breaking games for VR, and every player wants their favorite game in VR. In a perfect world, developers would be working hand-in-hand with VR developers in order to launch a game in both 2D and 3D.
I've seen too many games that just slap on some weird VR experimental thing that doesn't have anything to do with the base game (or in this case, doesn't mean anything for). This disapoints me that they took such a safe route, instead of going all out for an entire vr mode. My hopes is that once the devs at slime rancher see the bit of a ruckus this has caused, they may realize that more people care about VR than they think, and eventually they can expand on playgrounds and implement it into the full game.

I imagine that there would be just as much of a fuss if they implemented a multiplayer mode, and that ended up being a mini-game where you and a friend run around collecting as many slimes as you can. Everyone would be upset because the work was already put in, but isn't to a level of quality that is expected of a developer. I criticize slime rancher, and every other game I have ever criticized, because I love these games, and will spend hours and hours playing them. I want to see this game do better, and right now I just feel like my son just got a c+ on a test instead of an A. You guys can do better, I just know you can!
TL;DR
This is disapointing because it feels like a cheap demo instead of an actual game.

"Hey guys! Lets ♥♥♥♥ all over a good non-greedy developer because they didn't fall completely into the gimmicky VR trap!" - Jay11800 and Paradice Decay

VR is a waste of developer time and I can't wait until it goes the way of 3D monitors.

Remember 3D? Yeah, that's where VR is going. Enjoy your $300+ paperweights. Entitled brats, the lot of you!

Actually VR is here to stay and it's booming, new patents are being filed all the time' Kickstarters for VR are hitting their goals idays and even hours. Valve have a new VR headset coming, Oculus have the Quest planned for March 2019, PlayStation have new PlayStation VR2 plans in the works and there is now over 5 million gamers in VR.
VR is not about just games so you cannot compare to 3D, VR is being used by the medical professions, the military, shops and stores, it's only going to get better.
We are lucky to be able to use VR to play games, I don't have a £300 paperweight, my £600 mobile phone is used less than I use my HMD for VR.

Post like this are to help developers new to VR to understand why we are so passionate about VR and why we crave more than a standard VR playground. Look how successful Hellblade has been with the developers opening the FULL game to VR and you know what... it's absolutely mind blowing, 100% better than the flat version and 200% more immersive... in VR those voices really do get in YOUR head.

I don't enjoy post like this, I would rather give the develpers compliments rather than negativity and we don't need just gimmicks.
You know what we are excited for Borderlnads 2 VR - it's the FULL game, yes you heard me the FULL game...... Can't wait.

And I can understand the concept there, and honestly coming with some criticism isn't horrid although on this subject most complaints about it come from heightened expectations on what it was going to be which threw out all the confirmed word of the devs.

To note, pretty certain this was their first vr project.

The problem with this is that this isn't THEIR first VR project, it's the work of 3lb studio.
I've done a bit of looking, and they seem to be just another VR compnay, with their own products and their own work. I'm not going to throw them into this conversation, but the fact that another company was wrangled in to do this, makes it even more disapointing that this was just a demo for what should be a full game.

Expectations are why fallout 76 and battlefield V are complete garbage, because people don't care about quality anymore, and the few remaining people who fight because they believe that their products can be much better, are being railed on as being "haters", "misinformed", or thown away as a negative critic. If you want to follow the trend and just block out everyone who expects more from developers, thats fine, but honestly I'm tired of this trend of "hey lets put the least amount of effort in to something that can make a quick dollar". No this is not a free DLC, it requires the base game.

*sigh* I feel like if this didn't come out around the time when all these AAA companies just plop out a half-made product, I wouldn't be so harsh on it. I'd be disapointed at most, but right now I just am tired of seeing people who genuinely care about the games they play being flamed into the ground because they know that it can be better

And paradise decay, I'm sorry to inform you, but as much as I freaking love borderlands 2, it seems the vr version is:
Single player only
PSVR Exclusive (maybe timed, who knows?)
https://blog.us.playstation.com/2018/10/09/first-look-at-borderlands-2-vr-launching-december-14/
Pretty disapointed as a borderlands fan that the main purpose of the game (being a BAMF with your friends) is completely taken out. I don't know how balance will be changed, but being Overpowered level 8 with no partners is a complete nightmare, especially as krieg (which makes me wonder if they are even going to bother with the DLC).
