this comes down to numbers i've been crunching for ages, but an auto feeder spits out exactly enough food to feed 12 when set to max speed. this value also doesn't quite fill the plort collector in a day, preventing a loss of plorts. due to the perfect food count we also don't waste any food either.
now with twelve there is more of a risk for escaping, so for that it does come down to personal preference, but if they are well fed you really don't need to worry about them escaping.
Cheers!!
While I'm always up to have someone double check my work, these numbers I've been testing and crunching for years now and they've proven repeatedly to be accurate and line up with some other things I've dug up in the code as well. Its fair to double check things, but you shouldn't see anything different for most slime varieties.
