Can I free range Phospor Slimes if they're in The Grotto?
Do I have to contain them? I'm cheap and it seems like they'd stay in the cave just fine without needing corrals. Just spam food into the cave and profit.

Yes, you can safely let Phosphors loose in the Grotto. They don't really try to escape, though occasionally one or two might wander into the tunnels leading outside.

Yeah, that's a price I'm willing to pay.

It's what I've done. I've combined boom with phosphor and I have around 20 of them in the cave. Probably going to switch them out for honey with phorphor though as all the explosions are a bit annoying.

Free range phosphor slimes are they only slimes for me. They're just so happy living their little slime lives.
Even better, fully upgrade a farm (without the Scaretarr, that ruins the point of it) and grow Cuberries. Then let loose a bunch of Phosphor slimes. Phosphor shimes' favorite food are Cuberries, so they'll spit out two plorts each. Periodically return and colloct your plorts.
I'd recommend storing several Cuberries in a silo for when your farm runs out of Cuberries.

not judging. but im curious as to why one would do free ranging? it just seems like an odd and illogical action to me. with phospher slimes it is understandable, but the risks of free ranging multiple types of slimes seem pretty darn high.

I'm free ranging the lower section of the cave, have all 3 spots as fruit trees, and it's a pretty self-sufficient profit machine with phosphor slimes. Also I free range tabby slimes on the other expansion because it is also self-sufficient with the chickens.

You can free range the grotto, the overgrowth (respawning meat/veggies/fruits). And the ranch. As long as you only have a single type slime in each area. Science area they tend to jump into the ocean.

Overgrowth - Free range largo Explosion+Rads alone with the oca plots.
Grotto - Free Range Crystal+Phosphers with cube trees, top level two chicken plots.
Ranch - No slimes, Farms + Silos.
Science - Pens 4 (hunter/honey)(explosion/rad)(crystal/phosphers)(rock/tabby) + 1 puddle pond.

Outside the Ranch there are those pink slimes. I just swarm that area with them and throw my carrots down to them and when I pass by I collect the pink plorts.

ah, does free ranging allow one to have more largos than what a coral can normaly hold?

Very much so, I like the explosion / Rad largo. Only issue I've had is when the explosions send plorts everywhere. But on the point of holding more I have around 20+ in overgrowth and the same in Grotto. But I have most the plots farmed or chicken cooped~Grotto top level. This way you're able to utilize the space / plots fully while building overstock for the actual pens near science barn.

But this isn't how the game I believe should be played, but that's how I play / enjoy ranching.Having a pen with more then 4-5 largos just doesn't look right in my opinion. Plus plorts tend to slide out sides oddly enough(may get fixed alpha I know).

thats understandable. i like having them in pens only because its safer and allows me to keep track of my plort income. which benefits me in slime slience

massive damage that is a pretty good suggestion for me I have to farms one is maxed and the other was just built and in three ingame days I maxed out a silo slot not all four

I free range phoshpor/pink largos in the Grotto. I just plant Cuberrys in every plot and then release as many phosphors and pinks as I can find. I keep doing it until my computer almost crashes every time I walk into the room and my framerate drops to single digits. then I wait a couple days and do other things, checking the farms once in a while to make sure they are still producing. when it is harvest time i just launch one odd plort into the room to create a Tarr which kills everything in the room and then dies, leaving a room full of plorts to vacuum up. The only problem is transporting them all to the sale machine.

You can do this with any pink/ * largo combination, but it's easier with the vegetarians. Chickens just don't reproduce quickly enough, I largo with pinks so that I can increase the population as quickly as possible.
My Grotto:
3 cuberry gardens at the center. Fully upgraded.
20 phosphor/hunter slimes.
1 pond with 4 puddle slimes, 1 extra garden at the entrance.
