In your case, it's gone forever. The ocean you speak of is called the Slime Sea. It surrounds the the world ground of all the land masses. And if you shoot anything in there that item is gone forever no recovering it. If you jump into the Slime Sea, you'll get knocked out cause people can't survive it consciously and you'll lose a few days while you recover from the Slime Sea. And yes, I've been in the Slime Sea before as well as accidentally knocked things or shot plorts in there.
Well, it's possible to find more gold plorts if you have spotted the gold slime. Cause it could have visited the other areas of the map before disappearing for good. One day I had spotted a gold slime, I got a plort from it. That was in the Dry Reef area, one of the first areas. I went on exploring the map for items I needed, I went to the Moss Blanket one of my favorite areas. And there were random gold plorts there! 3 of them just there, with no gold slime in sight or even heard in the Moss Blanket. And no slime ever eats gold plorts, so I wasn't mistaking those glowing plorts. I collected them before I went back to the ranch cause it was a lucky day for me. I can't explain how the gold slime works. But I'm guessing from what I witnessed there's a chance it'll visit other parts of the map on its own, get some food by luck, eat and plort and leave even without a rancher present to see or hear it. So I got to habit of visiting all the areas I can each time I leave my ranch, just in case there's a chance of finding random gold plorts.
And to reply to you correcting how many days a rancher is knocked out, I'm sorry if I got it wrong. It's been a while since I played it, I have been good on avoiding the Slime Sea. But last time I fell in it, I think I was knocked out for 2 days, but I can't remember. So I settled with saying "a few days" in my original comment. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just explaining why I mistaken how long the knock out could be. I didn't mean to misinform anyone. But honestly they can jump in the Slime Sea for themselves to see how long it knocks them out. I'm sorry if I upset you.
