Yeah coops are better. Coops are designed for the chickens. Though if you have very hungry slimes for chickens, it doesn't hurt to put some chickens in the slimes' corrals that eat chickens. Cause they'll age normally even within a corral of chicken eating slimes, they'll survive until adulthood/next time those slimes get hungry to eat them. I hope I helped :D
Free range is only really worth doing for the quantity in that you can pick up from the natural nodes in the overgrowth.
