Coops are better, unless you're free ranging Slimes.

Yeah coops are better. Coops are designed for the chickens. Though if you have very hungry slimes for chickens, it doesn't hurt to put some chickens in the slimes' corrals that eat chickens. Cause they'll age normally even within a corral of chicken eating slimes, they'll survive until adulthood/next time those slimes get hungry to eat them. I hope I helped :D

I do both in the overgrowth. It's helped me keep my meat eaters fed until I got the last coop upgrade anyhow.

Yeah, I went to pop one of the Tabby Gordos, so I needed chickens. I got 46 chickens alone in the Overgrowth, and I don't have a coop, they just spawn there.

Coops are by far statiscally better, having a 100% chance to produce an egg per cycle compared to the 50% of free range. Upgrades can further increase this divide by adding a 50% chance for 2 eggs per cycle (and 1 check) and double the adult population gap.

Free range is only really worth doing for the quantity in that you can pick up from the natural nodes in the overgrowth.
