Yeah Puddle slimes get shy when different slimes get near them, but if they have a duckie, they should be more content I think. And I think the dock's passage kinda hinted at using the docks to free range, since there's netting up. But I haven't gotten a chance to try free roaming the docks. But you could test it out. You go down and empty the slimes into the area, then go about your business, leave them be for a while then you could return and see if they gotten into the water pool or not. Either way good luck :D
I left them with an abundance of carrots & chickens, but most of the remaining Slimes were hungry upon my return. So I think having a free range Docks is possible, but not practical due to collisions being buggy.
i found that putting quantoms or any slime mixed with quatom except the ones i mentioned above works well in the grotto.. all slime types get caught in the net.. but quantoms can get off the nets easier via their ghosts... and if they go on the other side of the net which makes it hard to come back up.. quantoms can come back across via ghosts.. though they can also go up on the mountain cliff that hangs over the top of the docks... but they have always come right back down for me...
but just like the grotto where slimes tend to pile up in the back corner... in the docks if you put small slimes and they get near the plot of land by the stairs.. they tend to auto path between the net and the stair case and get stuck down on the bottom... with largos it seems to happen less often
