desktop icons disappearing, caused by wallpaper engine
today when i woke up i saw that windows 10 installed update (KB5051974) and wallpaper engine prompted me to restart to apply update 2.6, after doing so, all desktop icons disappeared along with the selection box thingy when you drag

restarted the computer and, sure enough, a moment before my wallpaper came up the icons disappeared again, solution ended up being to quit wallpaper engine and then restart file explorer, restarting explorer with wallpaper engine running causes the icons to show up for a brief moment then disappear again

id say this is more likely caused by the wallpaper engine update than the windows one but then again it's not like anyone can guess what microsoft is doing :leaCheese:

To test this, follow these steps:

1. Turn off Wallpaper Engine completely (right-click on tray icon -> Quit). This is important, otherwise it will just re-open the 32 Bit version.
2. Open Steam. Make sure you are on the latest version and not on an outdated branch as described in my previous post (2.6).
3. Launch Wallpaper Engine. It should give you 4 options to choose from. Choose the 64 Bit version.
4. Open the "General" tab of the Wallpaper Engine settings. Disable the automatic startup, now re-enable it to register the 64 Bit version as standard.

Does the 64 Bit version work for you?

If you do not get the 4 options to choose from in step 3., return to step 1. Then right-click on Wallpaper Engine in Steam -> Properties -> Set "Selected Launch Option" to "Ask when starting game"

Can you try and switch back to the "previous" branch and see if the issue persists or if it goes away?

Double-check that you can see version 2.5 at the top of the user interface.

yep, running 2.5.28 and it works perfectly fine, so the problem is definitely in the new update

appreciate the quick response, ill stay on the previous branch until a better solution is found :necroheart:

Could you take the time to go back to 2.6, make sure the issue is actively happening and then run our analysis tool to generate a log file and share it with me? Afterwards you can switch back to 2.5 for the time being, thanks.

read the post you linked again and sent an email with the file to your support mail, thanks again for taking the time to engage with this

It looks like RocketDock is injected into Wallpaper Engine and might be tampering with it / causing a conflict. If you turn off Wallpaper Engine 2.6 completely, then turn off RocketDock completely and then restart Wallpaper Engine 2.6, does the issue persist or does it go away?
Juno Feb 12 @ 9:08am
i actually noticed the message when i ran the conflict checking tool and already tried that before
tried again just now and turning off rocket dock has no effect on the problem

If you have this issue, please send me a log file from our analysis tool as explained here:

https://help.wallpaperengine.io/en/debug/scantool_support.html

Make sure the issue is happening while you run the analysis tool.
Same problem, rollback to 2.5.28 helps
I'm facing the same problem. when the icons on the desktop disappear. When I installed version 2.5. from another source, everything worked. But I don't know how to roll back the Steam version of the program. Could you please help?

The problem appears to happen with older, low-end graphics cards on Windows 10 only but we aren't sure why. We're investigating. Until then, you can revert to Wallpaper Engine 2.5 by selecting the "previous" release:

A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

sorry for the late response, psu gave out
yes, running the 64 bit version with the latest release does not cause the issue

interestingly enough, launching the normal version to make the icons disappear, then closing WE and relaunching the 64 bit version makes them appear again, without needing to restart explorer
