Wallpaper Engine for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Linux or SteamDeck
I noticed there is a Wallpaper Engine for Android, but not for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Linux or SteamDeck? I would love to see this product in these platforms as well. :shutuptakemymoney:

Per the document: "The situation is simply that it's not economically viable for us to add support for Linux or Mac OS at this time. If you look at the Steam hardware survey, you can see that less than 1% of Steam users use Linux. And again, this is split up even further into different distributions of Linux, mostly Ubuntu which comes in at a mere 0.25% of users."

That's because they are making it for Steam only; if they published it on Mac App Store, they would have a 1:1 ratio to get more people than just on Steam. Doing your research based on just one virtual store doesn't make it accurate.

I would love to have a chat with the devs.

Where would you put the workshop then? That is the key aspect of this app.

Wallpaper Engine does not have it's own servers, it uses steam's that already have a system in place that is suitable to hold millions of wallpapers as individual downloadable contents, does the Mac app store have it?
The devs are just two guys, they don't have the manpower (and probably the money as well) to manage such huge servers on their own, they chose steam exaclty for this reason.

And also developing an app for multiple different systems is overwelming for just two people.

You can put the workshop on Github.

Again Github, its free and can be used for this sort of thing.

There is no need for expensive servers. a) Github b) Other Alternatives.

Eh. Once the development is done in one platform, it can be easily ported to another. These devs already did the overwhelming part of the application. I am sure with the sales they have of this product they must be raking in some serious dough, and this could help develop the project on another platform. While I'm not one to leave the linux folks behind, the project can be developed with macOS and Linux in mind.

If published in the Mac App Store, this could have a pretty significant following, since this is not a game but an app itself. The exposure would be massive.

Probably one of the main problems is Apple. They are notorious for keeping their stuff walled. And seeing how Risque some of the wallpapers can be, it is likely they would never approve of the app for any Apple OS. Also, be going outside of Steam, you would lose a lot of controls Steam has, like the approved Wallpapers list, so you would be putting your devices at increased security risk.

This leaves Linux, but that is such a small minority, most big name manufacturers don't design for it.

Totally agree. The survey says about 1.41% Steam gamers play on MacOS, but this doesn't mean that there are only 1.41% would like to use Wallpaper Engine on MacOS. Definitely there are a lot of people like me who has both a MacBook and a PC and only play games on PC. But this doesn't mean that I don't want to have a wonderful wallpaper app on Mac.

I am a macOS Client Platform Engineer so I live on a mac for a living. My mac is for everything else, however I am a PC gamer. That will never change.

I think a product like this one would thrive beyond expectations on macOS. Taking it to linux from there is a walk in the park.

Honestly, that is a hot take, i'm not very aware of the number of users of both Mac OS and users of the various Linux distributions, sure thing, Windows is pratically dominating the personal computer market (maybe the numbers nowadays are different?), but in fact, using your arguments based on just one sales location in your favor is too limiting, that ain't how it rolls.

Who knows, nowadays the number of users of the other two types of operating systems has already increased a lot, even more so with the popularization of Proton and Vulkan, I imagine the penguin people are very happy with this.

Anyway, for those who are interested in Wallpaper Engine on Linux/MacOS, i remember watching a youtube video explaining how to use the program in KDE, and what about the Mac OS? Well, there is a project called "Wallpaper Player Mac" on github, it's a project from haren724, I suggest you guys go check it out.

Edit: It's much easier if I provide the link right here: https://github.com/haren724/wallpaper-player-mac

From what I understand, the possible devs are Tim and Biohazard, just search in General Discussions with the tag "mac os" and you should find those guys's profiles.
About Biohazard itself? Take a look at this locked topic: https://steamcommunity.com/app/431960/discussions/2/144512875333557935/?l=english

There is someone called Rhy too, from what i understand, he's the wallpaper engine administrator or something like that.
