You will need to add the affected directory to the whitelist of your antivirus app, delete all files (because it has probably placed a permanent lock on them) and then fully reinstall the app according to this FAQ page:

https://help.wallpaperengine.io/en/debug/reset.html#fully-uninstalling-wallpaper-engine

And no, it is not a virus. It happens all the time, there is no threat on your system.

Be aware that sometimes, antivirus apps like Bitdefender also flag partially downloaded files in the "downloading" directory of Steam. Steam uses this folder to place partially downloaded files and a lot of antivirus apps freak out when they find partially downloaded .exe files like that. Ensure that you exclude the "downloading" directory from your antivirus app too and delete its contents as well if you encounter this issue. By default, it's located here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\downloading

Cannot install new update
Even after doing 6 different exceptions for all the different exes in my antivirus program (even exception on my steam temporary download folder). It is literally impossible to perform/finish the download via steam. This is a first, it never happened before, is there an issue with steam's distribution of the new files?

I tried to reinstall the program and now I just cannot download/install it anymore. RIP wallpaper engine.

I'm also having a similar problem, but it's stopping it specifically due to a trojan.
Trojan.GenericKD.72992858
Going to keep it uninstalled for now until I see some response from the devs. Could be something getting in this release/update that wasn't supposed to if you catch my drift.

Update broke Wallpaper Engine for users of Bitdefender. Disabling the anti-virus doesn't fix it - it keeps saying it can't copy the wallpaper32.exe. I tried reinstalling but now it gives me a disk write error.

Edit: ok I bypassed the antivirus by adding the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\wallpaper_engine to the whitelist. You can add it by clicking Protection > Advanced Threat Defense > Settings > Manage Exceptions. Add to all exceptions.

Edit 2: I was forced to install on another drive because of the disk write error

Likely a false positive.
A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

There's no virus... Yeesh the paranoia around here

BitDefender often labels JavaScript files in Wallpaper engine as malware....But if you actually open the file and look at it there isn't anything malicious in the code, its just an algorithm flagging it as possibly dangerous. Yeah it shows up in the AV has HORRIBLE_TROJAN_crytoyatayata...Its just a flag.

In the case of blocked web addresses, its almost definitely just blocking a browser notification popup or an Advert from browser...ESET does that all the time when Google Chrome has sites that are allowed to send spam, then it will spam you with messages of how good of a boy it was for stopping them...

Maybe this fella that was freaking out should reinstall their OS if this is causing anxiety. I am most certainly not getting any weird web address messages

Anywhooo, lets focus on what really matters....Getting Wallpaper Engine working on Z Fold 5

:D

Here's how to fix step by step if Bitdefender hosed your Wallpaper Engine install.

1: Open BitDefender, go to Protection > Antivirus > Settings > Manage exceptions > Add an exception.

Browse to your Steam directory...\steamapps\common\wallpaper_engine and add it. Save.

2: IF YOU HAVE CREATED YOUR OWN WALLPAPERS - OTHERWISE SKIP THIS STEP

Open File Explorer, browse to Steam directory...\steamapps\common\wallpaper_engine\projects and copy the \myprojects directory somewhere safe, such as Desktop.

3: Open Steam, uninstall Wallpaper Engine.

4: In File Explorer, browse to Steam directory...\steamapps\common\ and manually delete entire \wallpaper_engine directory.

REBOOT COMPUTER TO UNLOCK INSTALL DIRECTORY

5: Open Steam, re-install Wallpaper Engine.

IF YOU BACKED UP YOUR PERSONAL FILES IN STEP 2, in File Explorer copy \myprojects directory back to
Steam directory...\steamapps\common\wallpaper_engine\projects

Run Wallpaper Engine.

For what it's worth, I have had Wallpaper engine for quite some time now, and bit defender. This is the first time an update from it is being flagged. Previous updates were never flagged. So clearly something has changed to trigger it with the latest update.

I'm curious about what specific change the anti-virus does not like.

I have deleted the wallpaper.32 file...

Is it possible to recover it? Perhaps by reinstalling?

Verify integrity of the files.
