Fix for Wallpaper Engine crashing since update on 10/1/2023

I understand that the dev may not have time to make a general post about what could be causing the issues with crashing in Wallpaper Engine after the recent update. I didn't have malware or antivirus on, had done a clean install of WE and my nvidia drivers. The only thing that got the program running again without crashing was unsubscribing from my wallpapers. It's unfortunate and i'm not sure which one(s) caused it. But definitely worth trying if none of the other fixes on the .io site are working. Instructions can be found @

Edit: Most likely the wallpaper that you were using is the one causing the issue. I tried resubscribing to the wallpaper I used before the crashes, and it immediately started crashing again. If you subscribe to a wallpaper and your app starts crashing, use the above method and unsub from it.

There is currently a bug in a specific custom effect created by a user that is causing the app to crash, we think we have fixed the problem. You can test it by opting into the beta:

It should be fixed on Wallpaper Engine 2.3.22 or newer.

The fix didn't work for me, I am playing Counter Strike 2 and when I want to launch it, it keeps crashing / reloading it so It automatically switch from the Counter Strike menu to Windows.

Same here after update. It is caused by AI Copilot. A temporary solution for now is opening file explorer. That fixes the problem until you open AI Copilot again. Another user came up the the solution here.

Noticed a new bug now that occurs on windows start up and file explorer crashing. so audio from my wallpaper will play no problems but it is a total black screen. The only solution that I have been using as a fix is doing a clean install of nvidia drivers. once the install is complete then I have full visuals back for the wallpaper. but I have to do this every time at each restart. luckily the reinstallation doesn't take too long, maybe 2 minutes but it is very inconvenient.

I updated my video driver and then reinstalled the Wallpaper Engine and it stopped crashing.
