toggle layer visibility?
Is there any way to animate or setup a layer to become visible after a set period of time and then after another set period go invisible again, such as creating blinking eyes by activating a layers containing the eyes closed image?

You can try using timeline animations. You can bind the timeline animation to the blend effect to make the eyes closed texture appear during a set period of time and then another set period go invisible again. https://docs.wallpaperengine.io/en/scene/timeline/introduction.html

Here's the tutorial for blinking using the Shake effect, if you wanted to try this instead: https://wallpaper-engine.fandom.com/wiki/Tutorial_Eye_Blinking

Thank you for replying. I have looked at the timeline animations, but all I can see that is saved to the timeline are the coordinates so I cant seem to change the blend effect or visibility. I could place the picture off the screen and in a split second move it into position but that creates visual glitches so I abandoned that route.
have tried the shake effect and it's ok, my eyelid picture looked better. but this works for now. It's not just the eyelids that I asked my question for but for general scene changes by showing and hiding layers.

You cannot animate the visibility via timeline animations, but you could animate the opacity slider, it's also in the main property list of an image layer.

But if you have any movement effects on the character the shake effect could still be advantageous since it would work better than a separate layer that wouldn't move with the motion.

Timeline animations can be used than more than just the origin. You can bind the timeline animation to "Blend amount" for the Blend effect.

Yeah. He should use blend with the separate texture, rather than opacity on a separate layer.

Ah I get it now, I have to add effect to the image and then I can link the effects to the timeline. It seems pretty promising in the quick testing I have just done so thanks you both very much. I'll try both the opacity and Blend modes and figure out which looks best for my purpose.

The opacity effect will not allow you to import your "eyes closed" texture onto the same layer as the "eyes open" texture, so you should bind the timeline animation to a blend effect rather than opacity. If you import the "eyes closed" texture as its own layer, then it will not move with any animations of the "eyes open" layer as Biohazard stated.

I was adding the eye closed image as a new layer so the opacity method worked with this. It took some experimenting to figure out how to add the eyes closed image using the blend method on my characters image as I couldn't figure out how to position the image and keep it to the correct scale. Until I ticked the transform box, the small image filled the entire screen. Anyway I finally got the blend method working fine and animated my character blinking and it looks great.
Thank you, this was a learning experience and I can use this knowledge in multiple uses.
