Wallpaper Engine

Wallpaper Engine

Zobrazit statistiky:
I cannot run any "4K video" from workshop.
I tried like 8 videos wallps from workshop but not a single one works. Sometimes Wallpaper Engine pops a window with error: "video error occurred c00d5212". Sometimes its just white wallpaper screen. Tried to google it without success. Any suggestions? :2016snocone:

Hey,
Do you have Windows 7 by chance? Unfortunately Microsoft does not support 4k on Windows 7 in the video player.

If that's not it, it may be a third-party codec interfering.

Cheers

I think the best chance you have is resampling the videos down to 1080p yourself after downloading them from Workshop (or just asking the uploader to upload a 1080p version).

If you are feeling adventurous, you could probably try using a codec pack like 'K-Lite' and see if you can configure it to somehow enable 4k support. But trying that may do more harm than good in this case (someone else seemed to have additional issues because of K-Lite being installed). So I wouldn't really recommend it based on that.

Yo, first of all thanks for the nice program here, i like it :)

I'm on Win 7 too and didn't want to change to 10.
Is there realy no way to get us 4k somehow?
Would love to use my 1440p Screen in all of its gloury :D

Hey,
Unfortunately I don't know of any better solution so far. In theory there might be a codec from some pack that might make this possible - basically any Windows Media Player/Media Foundation codec should be picked up by Wallpaper Engine through Windows too.

So if there's a way to enable 4k support for mp4/H.264 in WMP on Win7, it should also make it possible here.

Yeah, there is something different between the W.E. implementation and WMP. On Win7 I can get WMP to use a handful of 4k enabled decoders just fine, but enabling these causes all video backgrounds to stop working. No error message, just a white background and high cpu use from W.E.

Which decoders are those exactly? Are they from some public pack I can try?

But the fact that they affect Wallpaper Engine in some way probably proves that Windows seems to select the custom decoder at least, so I'm not really sure where to go from there yet.
k-lite.
LAV or ffdshow decoder
LAV or Haali splitter
same result for either. WMP works. W.E. white background with no error message.

Hm looks like K-Lite only supports DirectShow and does optionally disable Media Foundation system wide, which explains why it can break Wallpaper Engine, because I'm using MF.
Not that this is the last word on this, but I couldn't find any replacement MF codecs for any format. I found some additional codecs that MF doesn't support out of the box but that was it.
anyone knows the reason for "Media Foundation" nor supporting 4k on win7 or is this just another bad move of microsoft forcing their "old" customers to win10?

I don't see any reason why Microsoft couldn't add support for 4k in Win7 through Media Foundation, other than just not wanting to spend resources on it at this point.

The thing is, in fact, that Microsoft has abandoned DirectShow since Vista/Win7 and since then asks everyone to use Media Foundation instead. I don't know if DirectShow even supports H.264 natively at all or if that has been made possible through community codecs only.
I was looking to see why Microsoft abandoned DirectShow. To see what the differences are that makes MF superior. Turns out MF doesn't replace DS yet, and for certain use cases DS is still the recommended solution per Microsoft. Wallpaper Engine, needing only to do decoding, would be recommended to use MF per their guidelines.

DS native format support:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd407173(v=vs.85).aspx

Edit:
Also, the built in H.264 DirectShow codec wouldn't help us much. It only supports decoding videos up to 1920x1088. All users would have to install codecs to enable 4k support.
