What I would probably resort to is using some sort of existing web service for this and then simply access it via the "Open from URL" button in Wallpaper Engine. For example, for stocks you might use a real-time streaming page like this which also has a "fullscreen" button:

However, that is just an example and not necessarily a recommendation. If you know web-based technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript well enough, you could build a webpage / wallpaper which tracks stock indices of your choice.
