Can you check in this folder if there are any files with .mdmp extension: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\wallpaper_engine ?

It means the program just did not shutdown correctly, perhaps it is always being crashed by Windows when the PC closes because there is too much delay. What happens if you close and restart it directly with the tray icon, does it still show the safe start?

I'm adding an option to disable this feature, but until then, does it really only occur when restarting? I.e. if you close it with the tray icon, does it still do this or does it work normally?

If it only happens when restarting then Windows is to blame for not shutting it down right, perhaps because the shut down is taking too long.

i think that worked. closed it in the tray icon and restarted 4 times, each time booting up properly with the wallpaper with no safe start. only problem is the the windows color scheme resets to the default gray

Then I'm relatively sure that Windows naturally crashes the program instead of shutting it down, it could happen due to other software timing out when you shut down your PC and Windows just crashes everything.

The beta ( http://steamcommunity.com/app/431960/discussions/2/350544272219415004/ ) now has the aforementioned option to disable safe start and I also tried to add a second method of avoiding the issue - so perhaps you don't even need to disable it now.

This is a really old topic from 2017 and it's outdated. It's best if you create your own topic and describe the issue in more detail. There is no general fix for this that applies to anyone as the safe start popup basically means that Wallpaper Engine has crashed and the cause of the crash can be very different for different users.

If you get any specific crash error messages, please share them in a separate thread and we'll help you.
