Making already made .gif files into wallpapers question

Question. I do not own this game yet, but i wanted to ask before posting. Can i make my wallpaper a .gif file i already have? Or do i need to make it from scratch? And also, when i get the wallpaper i want, do i need the game open to keep it running? Thank you in advance

You can turn a gif or most any picture format into a wallpaper fairly easily. Though you do need to use the creator to make the wallpaper from that gif. There is a tutorial at http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=805078680 . If it's a small gif on a large screen I find adding a little bit of precision blur set to somewhere between .009 and .37 smooths the speckling out without quality loss. The first gif you do might take 5-20 minutes depending on how many features you want to add to it. After that a quick gif without frills could be a minute or two.

Wallpaper engine runs in the background to have the wallpapers up. The settings allow for a lot of pausing options when you have other things running or fullscreened to reduce the load on the computer for displaying, but it has to be running to display. I use the option that starts it on startup so it is always running without me having to do anything. (Currently it can load up that way without steam running as long as the wallpapers you want are stored on your computer - which the ones you make will be)

Note, you don't have to publish a wallpaper to use it. Though you may want to prepare for publishing to make a thumbnail, then click cancel instead of publish. I reccomend this if the gif you want doesn't fit within steam guidelines.
