Anti-virus issues: content file locked, disk write error
Back to FAQ: LINK

Several anti-virus programs detect the one or other file as false positives. Wallpaper Engine is more likely to encounter this issue than many games because it is programmed from scratch. Some files that come straight from Google for the web features in Wallpaper Engine are even falsely detected too.

If Steam fails downloading/updating anything and you checked that Wallpaper Engine is closed, it is most likely your anti-virus deleting files, putting files into quarantine or blocking entire directories on your harddrive. You will get 'content file locked' or 'access denied' errors in Steam. This needs to be resolved in your anti-virus by undoing the changes it did to your PC, most anti-virus programs have a quarantine window from where you can restore files or an exclusion list, where you need to exclude Steam's directories:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\wallpaper_engine
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\downloading
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\downloads

I'm submitting false positives when I get to know about them, but you can also use the links below to submit files if you want to.

A couple of AVs falsely detect it as "Virus", including Norton. Execlude it from the scan list and verify integrity of application cache like stated above to solve it.

It falsely detects chrome_elf.dll (which comes from Google Chromium) and deletes it. You have to add the directory wallpaper_engine to Aviras exclude list. Now verify the files over Steam to re-download the file. You might have to do the same with the 'downloading' directory of Steam C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\downloading or, alternatively, just exclude the whole Steam directory.

How to exclude directories:

If Steam still gives you disk write errors, it possibly means that Avira changed your directory permissions in Windows while deleting the file in error. You can use the new 'repair library' feature of Steam to fix this: Open the Steam settings, go to downloads, open the libraries, right click the relevant library and repair it.
I made it so my antivirus doesn't block it. When I install it it seems fine, but when it starts downloading the update it fails. I can't start it because of missing dll files. When I manually downloaded the correct dll files and dragged them to the correct folder it still doesn't work. I've installed the software several times, changed the download region, verified the files. So got anymore solutions?

Which files exactly?

It's possible that the AV blocked your Steam download folder too, can you see anything about that?

Did you restore them from the virus chest as the link above describes?

Is your Avast up to date? Because there are no hits on these files on virustotal.com at least:

I haven't restored them from Virus Chest. Avast is upto date.

Is it a case of false alert? Then I will restore it and set to ignore the said files.
Biohazard  [developer] Feb 28, 2017 @ 10:03am
It's a false alert, yeah.
prabs Mar 1, 2017 @ 7:42am
Thanks for replying mate. I restored it from chest and set to ignore as it is a false alert.

Cheers!!!

Execlude the directory from your anti virus and verify integrity of application cache.

360 total security does the same thing, it has avira and bitdefender engine on it. I fixed it by changing the protection mode from total security to performance, what changes is that, if you use "scan files when saved" It will cause "disk write error", so unchecking that option will solve the problem. This also works for any other antiviruses.
