NVIDIA FPS Counter
As I'm sure many Nvidia users already know, there is an FPS display in a corner of the screen when playing games. It just so happens it counts all my desktop backgrounds from this software as games and displays the fps counter over them which is really annyoing and doesn't really feel right.

Is there a way I can stop this whilst keeping the FPS counter turned on for all other games?

I think that's only if you use (or have installed) the GForce Experience or ShadowPlay? (which personally I don't bother with either as they seemed like mostly useless bloatware to me). I suppose you could disable it in the nVidia settings? But that might also disable it for being displayed for all games too.

Anyways, I recall reading recently a post from another User who mentioned that if you go into the Settings for Wallpaper Engine, on the General tab change the Graphics API option to OpenGL, OK it and then that FPS display no longer showed for wallpapers. They also mentioned they didn't seem to notice any difference in quality of the wallpapers either and everything was working fine for them.

Switching to OpenGL disables it for 'scene' backgrounds but not 'video' types. I could disable it in ShadowPlay but I like having it turned on and it's not worth the work turning it on and off every time I go in and out of a game.

I mean it's not the end of the world, it's just a little annoying so I was wondering if there was a possible way to hide it because I know there isn't a way to exclude specific programs on Nvidias end.

Bumping this up as I'm having the same problem. Anyone got this annoyance fixed?

Do you mean in general or per application? I don't know if Nvidia finally managed to add a per application setting but they definitely know they're lacking it.

We're talking about the (optional) GeForce Experience software, which includes the FPS counter (A.K.A ShadowPlay). I'm running the latest version (382.53) of the Nvidia controlpanel software (which is basically the driver software) and there is no per-application switch for the FPS counter, presumably because you only need the driver software to use your Nvidia GPU to the fullest.

So, unless Nvidia adds a per-application switch to their driver software, we won't be able to turn of the FPS counter for Wallpaper Engine, as it uses DirectX for rendering. I tried switching to OpenGL (), but that didn't work either.

The latest version seems to have done something because I'm not seeing the FPS counter op my desktop currently. I will post an update after I've investigated this.

Ok, so a clean install of the driver and GeForce Experience software seems to have fixed the FPS counter for now.

For those that keep having this problem, you could try out the Display Driver Uninstaller[docs.google.com] (DDU) tool. A third party tool to get rid of all traces left by Nvidia's software. Please take note that this might also delete any custom settings you're using!

Edit: @Biohazard: Maybe move this thread to Bugs or Suggestions?

So it is gone for any graphics API type? Even after a PC restart? They did want to exclude it so maybe it happened already after all, it was just necessary to do a clean reinstall as you explained.

Yeah, it's fixed for all APIs, but I've tested some more: after reinstall and restarting your PC, the FPS counter won't shop up, BUT if you restart Wallpaper Engine, the counter is displayed again. So: as long as you don't quit Wallpaper Engine, you won't get the FPS counter on your desktop.

This obviously won't work very well because when there is a new update available, Wallpaper Engine has to be restarted. So yeah, there's no working fix available until Nvidia adds a per-application switch for the FPS counter in their GeForce Experience software.

I would like to add that I'm sometimes using another FPS counter from NZXT called CAM[camwebapp.com] and that one does not display any FPS counter on my desktop. I think this is because it's just an FPS counter and not an overlay like ShadowPlay (the FPS counter plus some screen recording extras. More info here[www.nvidia.com].)

Edit: I recommend using FRAPS (only FPS) or CAM (FPS, Memory usage, PU usage and more) if you really want to see an FPS counter.
