What's the benefit of this opposed to VLC with videos?
Curious, please? Any persuasive arguments? I might buy this, but I'm uncertain how cool the 3D modules are.

I don't know if VLC media player is actually interactive.

This is the kind of information I need - how are those on Wallpaper Engine actually interactive? :D

Some wallpapers open up Unity or a similar engine that allows you to interact with an image/video on your screen.

a good example of the interactive wallpapers is the sheep wallpaper and the audio wallpaper (both are included when you buy the program) The sheep wallpaper allows you to pick up and move sheep around the screen, and the audio wallpaper has moving bars when audio is being played. Sure, those two don't sound all that exciting, but you can find more wallpapers on the workshop, so you may want to peruse it (although it's mostly anime wallpapers) and see if there's anything you like. Hopefully some of the community members have made some redeeming content to make up for all the anime wallpapers. My favorite wallpapers are derived off of 80s aesthetics, like the Delorean one or the neon grid ones. There's also some cool Beeple videos made into wallpapers, although they don't loop that smoothly.

If you're only interested in playing a video background is there any advantage to this over VLC media player's DirectX video background?
ok wonderful

if you are only going to use Wallpaper Engine to put video on your desktop, I'd say there is little it offers over other mentioned solutions. Only that it can pause video backgrounds when other fullscreen applications are running, or even free the memory completely.

But if you want to have wallpapers that react to sound and/or cursor movement, I'm not aware of any other program that matches Wallpaper Engine in customizability / amount of choice in wallpapers.

I'd say it's worth over the convenience it offers me. I can easily search up a name and find a good handful of results that are instantly appliable, load in files i find on other places of the web, or just create my own. It's kinda like a wallet per say, you don't need one when you have pockets, but it's better and more convenient thant digging through your pockets.

I mean, It's only $4 Which is nothing in terms of Steam funds.
