[SOLVED] Background randomly freezing after a while
Hello!
I've gotten the Android version of wallpaper engine, and the experience has been really solid.

However every so often I have to reapply the wallpaper as it just freezes and no longer animates, after reapplying it works fine again but it's rather annoying.

Wallpaper engine is set to running unrestricted so no battery optimisations are in play on this, anyone know why it freezes like that?

Running on Android 12 with my pixel 4a.

Thanks!

Yeah, I have this too, not that severe tho.
No, but it's rather annoying.
It goes against the entire point of having wallpaper engine.

And yes "Pause while saving battery" is turned off

Does this happen with every wallpaper including the default ones like Neon Sunset or Techno?

What I've discovered right now is that looks like only prerendered wallpapers get paused (didn't tested video wallpapers, but I'd expect the same result, since they work in the same way I assume), and for some reason it also pauses Twitchs pop-out player (only video, sound still plays). I'll try to provide video, if I can.

It wouldn't surprise me if Android's video system just randomly breaks for no reason. Maybe information on that can be googled, otherwise we have to plaster the whole app with logs to figure out how to detect this and simply restart the wallpaper.

Maybe for the same reason you cannot play spotify and watch twitch at the same time. But audio is always muted in videos, partly due to this behavior.

Maybe, but here's how it looks like

Tactical advantage is prerendered, sealed is dynamic scene.

Looks like it just doesn't want to play two videos at once. What if you multi-task youtube and twitch on half a screen each?

You're right, that's it, I've tried to play a local video and YouTube with twitch player at the same time and it can't, I'm not sure about scenes though, I definitely remember them pausing randomly, but can't reproduce it.

Yeah, would be essential to know if the issue can be reproduced just as easily with i.e. Neon Sunset by the OP or you.

The twitch overlay pausing is probably something entirely different.

I think an easy solution for the original issue would be to reload automatically if no new frame was delivered for a couple of seconds. So if this solely/primarily occurs on videos and seems to be a video playback issue, that's something we could try.

In my case it just seems to quit overtime, do note that it is indeed a pre-rendered wallpaper. Gonna check if this is also the case for a regular one. If that doesn't work I'll check one of the stock wallpapers. I'll keep ya'll up-to-date
Looks like using a scene (non prerendered wallpaper) has the same issues. Gonna try using a stock wallpaper.
By the way, the previously mentioned situations still had "react to motion" active so it was just the animated wallpaper

And this happened with a non-prerendered scene wallpaper for sure? I think that shouldn't be possible, because the motion is part of the scene animation then - could very well be possible on a video though, if the video system really is the culprit.
Hi, yeah. Tested on both pre-rendered and a scene, both seem to have the issue.

What is of note however; I do believe that the background made use of the video capabilities in wallpaper engine with some effects over it. Not sure if that pins down any suspicions to the culprit.

Hence why I'm still testing techno at this moment, I'll keep you posted.
So far no issues with Techno, I'm guessing it's video instances of backgrounds (even if it's a video in a scene)

However I don't have the problem of the wallpaper stopping while watching other videos like < blank > has shown in this thread. In fact I can run Both YouTube and twitch af the same time without issues.

Like I stated before it just seems to stop randomly and I'm quite unsure as to why.
