Apputil32.exe
Hello,

Recently i have updated my wallpaper engine to the latest verison. When i was updating wallpaper engine something strange appeared. Something called Apputill32.exe from Skutta Software GmbH and it asked me if i want to let it make changes in my PC.
Ofcourse I declined, i didn´t know what was that. So i went on Google and did some researches.
Then I discovered from some medias that says Apputil.exe (Without the number 32) is a virus called Aplich Worm and it may cause some dangerous issues to my PC.
So after all of the researches i just want to ask if the Apputil32.exe that appeard when i was updating Wallpaper engine is safe or not?

I apreciate your help, have a nice day!

The apputil32 executable is obviously completely harmless. It is occasionally responsible for stopping and restarting Wallpaper Engine. Your virus app is just freaking out because it probably detected it in a half-downloaded state since we just pushed an app update on Steam.

Make sure to tell any antivirus app to ignore the Steam "downloading" directory, especially Kaspersky likes to block genuine Steam downloads this way:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\downloading

If the app stops working properly now, you may need to do a clean reinstallation of Wallpaper Engine. This can happen if antivirus apps block / quarantine important .exe files by mistake.

By the way, "AppUtil" is also a very generic name for an executable, many apps will have executables that are named like this and they just serve some utility function. Any google search that tells you that it's a potential threat cannot be taken serious (at least in the sense that any executable is theoretically a threat but that's just a tad paranoid).

Hi Tim,
Thank you for responding to my question, but i just want to make sure for the last time that if it appears again (the Apputil32.exe) when im updating my Wallpaper engine. I can rather decline or accept it to make some changes in my PC without any harm right?
And again i apreciate your help a lot.

You should accept. It is a false-positive. It happens all the time. Your antivirus app is making a mistake, 100%. The fact that the app is properly signed with our company name means it's a genuine executable.

Can you please share which antivirus app you are using? I'll make sure to submit a report to them because we actually pay a lot of money and a company audit to properly sign our executables to prevent this type of thing from happening, unfortunately it still happens regularly with certain antivirus companies.

I don´t use any other antivirus than Windows defender and this is the first time it popped up like that, After i declined it to make changes in my PC, everything still works well, and untill now i have no problems, even with the wallpaper engine.

Update 1: I updated my wallpaper engine again 5 minutes ago to the version 2.4.82 and nothing appeared, everything is fine. So i dont think my antivirus is the problem. Maybe yesterday the Apputil32.exe has popped up cuz a bug or something like that.

Hello Tim, I today also got this same request from windows to allow "Apputil32.exe" to make changes to my drive. No antivirus other than windows. Must be a glitch or something in their system.
