Wallpaper Engine has crashed / Error code "0xC0000005"
When I open the app I get the message "Wallpaper Engine has crashed / Error code "0xC0000005" Access violation: trying to write to address 0x00000014" and it closes straight away.

I've tried the fixes suggested before - my antivirus isn't blocking it, I have uninstalled and deleted all wallpaper engine files and reinstalled, I've updated my drivers, I've run the test to see if anything clashes with it and it says nothing does... I just don't know what the issue is.

Here is the crash log. https://ufile.io/ory0kmi3

Please check if you have any .mdmp files in this directory: A:\Steam\steamapps\common\wallpaper_engine\bin

According to the log it looks like the ui32.exe process is the one that is not working so it should produce .mdmp files there. Can you also share those via ufile.io like the log?

Yeah, there are 4 of those files in that folder. Here they are. https://ufile.io/f/y0b23

Thanks, it looks like a problem with Steam.

Do you have any idle programs or such installed or did you perhaps install a pirated Steam game in the past? These may install fake Steam clients and might interfere with the actual Steam client that other programs see.

It could also be a legit Steam bug, however.

Idle programs... like lighting things? I have keyboard/mouse/pc lighting programs open in the background like wraith prism, rgbfusion, mystic light, etc. I haven't installed pirated games but I have like actiavted product codes on steam if that affects it? Maybe reinstalling steam would work? Or maybe I can contact steam if not. Thanks for the quick help anyway, I apprecaite it.

Steam idle programs are basically used to increase the game time on your Steam profile, they just pretend that you are playing a game. But in this case never mind, it sounds like it is most likely a problem with Steam itself.

Yes, if possible, please try uninstalling Wallpaper Engine and Steam, then reinstall Steam and Wallpaper Engine. This may help. But I'm afraid I don't think that Steam support will be able to help you, we may have to send this mdmp to them and show them the error that Steam produces directly.

Have you used Wallpaper Engine before successfully and did this issue only start recently? Or have you just gotten it and it never worked so far?

I've uninstalled wallpaper engine but not steam because it'll uninstall all my games and take ages to reinstall them so I'll have to do that at a later stage. I just got wallpaper engine the other day and since I got it, I've had this error. The weird thing was when I restarted my pc, it came back on and there was a wallpaper engine wallpaper on my desktop but when I open the actual app, it just crashes.

Have you been starting it while Steam was logged into the Steam account you are using to write here?

It's just a guess but maybe this issue is caused by being logged into an account that doesn't own the app. Perhaps you could reinstall it from the other account and try starting it from there?

This kind of situation with multiple accounts wasn't an issue in the past but if this is a bug with Steam that we can confirm then it should be possible for them to fix it.

Oh no, it's just this account is logged into my browser for some reason and my main account is logged in on steam and thats where I bought and installed it.

Alright, then that doesn't affect this issue of course. Reinstalling Steam is probably the only thing I can think of right now that you could try. I don't think you have to re-download all games, because uninstalling Steam won't delete their files, but there is of course always a risk that Steam won't be able to discover the files properly and re-download them anyway. You will need to re-download Workshop content though because Steam is only able to restore games, not Workshop.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that we believe this issue happens to people who have old Steam clients that didn't automatically update for some reason and now they don't work properly anymore. We are still waiting for Valve to see if there is anything we can do from our end, but generally all you need to do is ensure your Steam client is somewhat recent. You can check in the Steam help - about Steam menu how old your client is.
A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
