If you pick one from the recent list, is it a playlist too? Depending on the settings it would pick a random wallpaper from the list when switching to it.
This fixed it for me.
EDIT: So I just set up one playlist with 56 items. I clicked on one to set it as my background and closed the main configuration window. In the taskbar I right clicked on the wallpaper engine icon and then clicked on "Next Wallpaper". Nothing happened. My recent wallpaper list contained three items so I selected one that was not the one I was currently using and it switch to another wallpaper, just not the correct one. When I went back to the recent wallpaper list, the selection names changed. Some items having (56) behind the name of the wallpaper which I assume is an indication that it is in a playlist.
I closed the app down and relaunched it. No dice. Unsure what I'm doing to break this.
You can definitely manually recover the playlists, I can help with that, but I guess there is no point until the issue is fixed. Could you perhaps try the beta: http://steamcommunity.com/app/431960/discussions/2/350544272219415004/
I think the next wallpaper option might have issues if the wallpaper it tries to pick is missing files. Does the playlist in the browser show any 'no preview' images for you http://i.imgur.com/qvuFUMc.png ?
In an attempt to get it to re-appear. I clicked the "Next Wallpaper" option a few times to load up a handful of what I assumed would be recent wallpapers. This did not populate the "Recent Wallpaper" list or make it re-appear in the taskbar menu as an option.
Confused that this didn't work as expected, I clicked "Change Wallpaper" and manually switched to a few different wallpapers. This successfully added ONE option in the "Recent Wallpapers" task bar menu list. No matter how many different options I cycled through, the recent wallpaper list didn't gain more than one list item.
It was noted that when clicking the "Recent Wallpapers" option, it behaved just like the "Next Wallpaper" link, in that it would load up a new random wallpaper. The listed name that was clicked on was actually the name of the current running wallpaper.
After messing with it for a few minutes, the "Recent Wallpapers" option gained another list item, but it behaves similarly to the first. When clicking it, the user gets a "next wallpaper" and not the actual listed wallpaper that was selected. Unsure what triggered the second option to appear. Time maybe? I mean duration of time the wallpaper was running. When I was clicking through initially, I didn't leave each one up very long.
Every time you press 'OK' in the browser it saves your current wallpaper settings. If these settings differ from the previous ones, it will add a new entry to 'recent wallpapers'.
So the recent wallpapers list includes entire playlists or singular wallpapers if you don't use playlists. But it doesn't show all wallpapers that were played while merely using the same playlist. Maybe I could extend it to make recent playlists expandable into another menu or so later.
