Anyways, maybe you can try a utility that can save the icon positions and restore them back to positions when you want.
Perhaps try Iconoid. It's a nice little free utility that you can have automatically hide the desktop icons, the taskbar and mouse-pointer (you can set it to autohide those items after a few seconds of inactivity on the desktop).
One of the other features it has is when you right-click on it (from your Windows Tray), you have an option to "Save Icon Positions", so it will remember the current positions of all of your desktop icons, then an options to "Restored Icon Positions", which will put them back into the place of when you last did the save.
I use it and it seems to work good with Wallpaper Engine.
