Crash while changing wallpapers in wallpaper engine.

Hi,

I am experiencing crashes with few wallpapers while switching them through the engine. The error message redirects the cause on dependency to few running apps like FRAPS, PLAYS.TV, RAPTR etc. My complete config is given below and crash dumps are sent @ [e-mail].

Windows 10 Pro (14393)
36 GB RAM
1x - 250 GB SSD (app is not installed here)
3x - 2 TB HDD (Installed here)
1x - 1 TB HDD

Also additionally I am observing the black screen issue with my steam client as well. Tried everything that people suggested via different forums here (clearing the cache, running app in non-admin modes, reinstalling the app, un-checking the Directwrite option in steam interface options.)

Please let me know if I am missing anything here. Help me out.

Which exact wallpapers are crashing? It may be an issue in the wallpaper.

Looking at the mdmps, I don't think that Raptr is the cause in this case, but I have observed crashes by Raptr before and it also creates random, weird directories in Wallpaper Engine (random unicode letters).

Have you tried it without Raptr running just to confirm it's not causing it?

Hi I have sent you an image in email describing all my working and non-working wallpapers. Although when tried with another system with Win7x64 there's no issue with any of the wallpapers. Only observing in Win10. Also I am using AMD R9 290 with Win10x64 whereas using R9 FuryX with Win7x64.

Tried without Raptr and Fraps as well, its the same issue.

Also today I am experiencing random system hangs (3 times when started today). The only change is this new application.

Thanks for the image. It looks like there is no clear pattern which types of wallpapers work and which don't, so something is messed up.

The hardware and Windows version you are using are just fine, though.

Can you try verifying the files over Steam and updating the graphics drivers/install Windows updates?

Also, when it crashed after closing Raptr etc, did it stop showing the warning in the crash message?

I already tried with latest video drivers and updated windows as well. There's no change in the issue.

However after closing the FRAPS & RAPTR it did remove the warning from error message. Also I have tried running it by disabling my antivirus software as well (thought it may be interfering with custom wallpaper downloaded from steam community), but there's no luck there as well. I am using licensed version of quick heal total security.

I will try the verification as you suggested over Steam however, but I have a system where everything runs fine.

Still no success from any kind of solution. Still wallpapers are crashing and still the steam browser is just a plain black page. :(

What exactly does the Steam browser look like, can you show me a screenshot? I kind of missed that in the beginning (not that I could fix it, since if you really mean Steam itself, then I suppose only Valve could help there?).

Issues with Wallpaper engine crashes however still exists.

So today I am observing another issue during installation of wallpaper engine. It just throws error regarding verification of files is failed and asks me to verify over steam and restarts the installation again. Did the verification over steam as well but still facing the same issue. It just keeps installing again and again.

The steam black screen issue is fixed now after performing clean installation of the steam client. However I have noticed one pattern. I have a normal 2TB HDD mounted over my SSD where I have installed the steam client before, so if I install the steam client over the mounted HDD the issue is observed but when I install the client directly over my SSD the issue is not observed.

OK so I tried the whole steam client and wallpaper engine installing to SSD only and not on the mounted HDD and everything seems to be working fine. I am not sure why the mounted HDD installation was giving a problem but I am happy that I finally got the root cause of the issue.

Please let me know if you can work on this to fix to run the application on mounted drive as well. Thanks for your support I will keep you posted.

Yes, actually, could you try it with the recent patch?

The installer has a cancel button now and it should show the paths when an error like this occurs: "Failed to convert file path: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect" or at least I hope so.

Maybe seeing the path will give a clue about what's wrong.

But it might as well be a permission issue or something weird like that.
