Steam Deck Users - Troubleshooting
Several Age of Fear games have already been verified as fully compatible with the Steam Deck (indicated by the green badge). Since all games share the same engine and GUI, it can be assumed that all of them are verified.

The Age of Fear series was tested on Proton Default 7.0-3 (Linux); however, they should work on any newer Steam Linux Runtime. Please do not use Windows Runtime.

We have created an Official Age of Fear controller layout in Community Layouts (accessible from Steam Controller option). It maps the buttons as following:
  • Button A - [Enter], displays Skills or Turn Menu
  • Button B - [Escape], cancels last selection or menu
  • Button X - [Z], cycles between zooms
  • Button Y - [Space], hides / shows GUI (during battle and campaign screens)
  • The joystick is bound to keyboard arrow keys and is used to scroll the battlefield
The game supports gestures like dragging to scroll and long-press (hold finger for 1 second or more - the delay is configurable in Options).

if game does not start, crashes or does not move beyond black screen

1) At first, please unsubscribe all workshop items - some of user creations are interacting with each other and crashing game.

2) Restart your Steam Deck and retry

3) Run game in Configuration mode, switch to last tab (Reset) and press 'Reset Configuration' red button. Game will restart and settings will be restored to defaults.

4) Open Compatibility, check 'Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool' box and set it to Steam Linux Runtime

if the game doesn't start (how to reset settings):
1) open Settings (icon next to controller icon), go to General and scroll down
2) there are Launch Options, click on them and select 'Ask when starting game'
3) next time you click on Play it will give you a selection of options, select Configuration.
4) from Configuration dialog, select Reset and then Reset settings.

if the virtual keyboard doesn't appear
1) Pressing the STEAM + X Button together will open the virtual keyboard or close it if it is already open.
2) When the virtual keyboard is visible, the screen does not register any clicks (press B Button to hide the keyboard).

ui elements are not registering clicks:
1) Open Configuration -> Controls and shift Dragging sensitivity a bit to the right.

if you experience bad performance and choppy animations:
1) Open Configuration -> Render and decrease the quality of rendering

if you are experiencing any bugs or issues, please send us an email to ageoffeargame@gmail.com
1) Please include a screenshot if available
2) Please send us the error from the logs. To view logs, open Configuration -> Info and click on View Logs. You can scroll to the bottom and screenshot the error (it will be a multi-line entry with the word 'Exception').

The Valve Steam Deck compatibility guidelines require games to refrain from displaying PC-like GUI elements, such as cursors and references to shortcut keys. However, in response to player requests, we have added an option in Configuration -> Render -> Show Pointer to make the cursor visible.

Shortcut keys are available and can be bound from the Steam Deck Controller:
F1 - Display shortcut keys
F2 - Help
Press 1, 2 or 3 to zoom
Press Z to cycle zoom
Enter - Display menu
M - Toggle unit status
N - Toggle unit names
T - Toggle accessible areas on map
Escape - Hides menu / Cancels selection
Space - Toggle UI
Tab - Next unit
Arrow Keys - Navigate battlefield
B - Show Bestiary
F - Toggle smart camera
H - View Tutorial
K - Toggle actions log
L - Show Combat Log
M - Toggle unit status
N - Toggle unit names
S - Show status monitor
T - Toggle accessible areas on map

Take care,
Les
