you can get it for free if you compile it from source code: https://github.com/aseprite/aseprite/ . In this case, their EULA applies: https://github.com/aseprite/aseprite/blob/main/EULA.txt

Do you work for free?

Because it's top tier software worth the price. I think it should cost even more for entitled people.

Yeah it's legit (the devs adressed this in a FAQ at their website: https://www.aseprite.org/faq/#if-aseprite-source-code-is-available-how-is-that-you-are-selling-it ), the devs are fine if you compile it YOURSELF (as in, not using automated tools to do the job, those count as redistributing Aseprite, which isn't allowed and as such they tend to get taken down by the devs)

Just keep in mind that you'll need to download some dependencies to build Aseprite, and you'll need to do it for every version if you want to update it

Edit: separated the () from the link as that breaks it

you can also find this link if you go to their website ( https://aseprite.org/ ), scroll down to the bottom, and click on "GitHub" in the "Development" section

cool thanks :)
Why would they make an open-source version of paid software? I can literally just go on GitHub and nab a free beta copy? That's insane!

it was open source until mid 2016, but since then it's more so "open-development" due to the current EULA (an open source software should let you redistribute the code/compiled version, which Aseprite forbids)

This is also why Libresprite exists, as its a fork of the last Aseprite version before changing licenses, preserving that fully open source aspect (though it lacks a lot of features that have been added to Aseprite since then, like extensions)

You basically pay to get a hassle-free version with some benefits (like automatic file recognition for .ase/.aseprite files in Windows and macOS, and already compiled software updates until version 1.9, which you wouldn't have if you were to compile it yourself), along with supporting the devs

While these are already compiled in in their respective websites, some Open Source software (like Krita and Pixelorama) also have a free version in their websites, with a paid version on Steam, as a way to support development

so does this mean that i would be using an older version of the software if i got it from github?

If you compile it from the official github (the links jagholin sent in the first reply) you'll get the current version available for download, you can also compile an older version if you want, but you'll need the correct dependencies to compile those ones too
bruh if you cant afford this then you have way bigger issues
Goes on sale often, it is a valuable and worthy software that will never have you looking else where ever again, but even I was skeptical at first, I got it for 13.99 on steam.

It's gone to up to 30? It was below half that when I got it originally, and that wasn't during a sale or anything.

Still if you are in a loose situation here, download and compile it from Github to get the current one for free; https://github.com/aseprite/aseprite/
you can use libresprite, its a fork of an older version where it was still allowed to edit and publish the source
