I think its important to learn regular art in tandem with pixel art, so you can use knowledge such as human anatomy to guide you through pixelling a person, for example. You may also want to try studying many different artists individual pieces / spriters resource and compare and see what artist generally do most of the time, what's right, how they animate certain actions and such. Coincidentally I think it's good to learn how to learn on your own without tutorials, only using them if you're stuck. Referencing, comparison and practice are the best methods to gradual improvement imo

I agree with this. Learn to draw, it is the foundation of nearly all forms of art. You won't make it very far without having a strong foundation in drawing. There are limited exceptions, but behind nearly all great pixel art is an artist who is also great in traditional art.

Ive not read the entire convo but ima say learn foundations, tutorials arent much help if you dont have a basic mastery over pixel art and general art foundations. Once you learn how to break things into basic shapes, shading, color theory and all the other things that follow you can easily look at a object or think of a idea and transfer it into sprite art so much easyier. Like every art medium has basic techniques to master to.
