Aseprite

Aseprite

How do you make a tilemap?
The docs say it's done in the Layer dropdown but I don't see it.
Space+N also does nothing.

Aseprite 2.28 (latest version according to Steam)

Appreciate an answer without having to watch videos. I tried googling for this and people just spammed video links in the replies as if that's a good answer. I don't have the patience for video tutorials.

At the moment it's only available in the v1.3 beta (go to Library > Right Click on Aseprite at the side of the games list > Properties > Betas > Where it asks you to select a beta branch, select the "beta - v1.3 Beta version - preview features"), once you do that Steam should automatically update Aseprite to that version, which includes the tilemap features along with other stuff (such as a dark theme), and that keybind of adding a tilemap layer in the timeline should work then

I don't really know why Steam shows that 1.2.28 is the latest version, maybe it's because the 1.3 is in beta, and it doesn't really counts it as the last version because of it

Anyway, keep in mind that it's only available as a beta as of right now, so there may be some bugs here and there

Alright thanks.
My only alternative is Pyxel Edit and I haven't used that in so many years that I don't even know if it's still alive haha.

Update: Welp, that doesn't work at all like I thought it would.

I guess I'm still going to need to get a calculator and manually measure out an atlas in 2021 instead of just having the program do it for me the way Pyxel Edit or Tiled do it.

Or I guess I could just do the lazy route of "the canvas is 4096x4096 and I'll trim the excess when I'm done" like I used to lol. What a pain...

Yeah I was also surprised by how it works at first, it's a bit weird when compared to other programs but after a while I got used to it a bit. At least it works for making easy changes in the tileset rather than before, which becomes handy when you want to make Asset Packs or assets for your own games

There's two options there, the one with the key you say, and a "button" above that you can click (which in this case may say None or the equivalent of that if you have Steam in another language), in which then you can select the beta from a dropdown list. You need to click the first one (which says None and has a little arrow pointing below), and select the "beta - v1.3 Beta version - preview features". Once you do that, Steam will update Aseprite to that version
