Opening a 2nd picture in a new tab?
Ok I'm going to try hard to explain my question. I have a picture on my desktop. I right click and select Open With Aseprite. It opens and all is good. Now say I want to open a second picture, maybe I need to grab a part whatever. If I open that second picture with the above method it opens up another instance of Aseprite with a new tab and I'd have to juggle between the two.

Is there a way to have it so if I open that second picture from my desktop that it will just open another tab in the original instance?

Hi there YukoValis, if all the images are .aseprite, double-clicking the files should open all sprites in the same Aseprite instance as new tabs. If you want to open other kind of images (PNG, JPEG, etc.) a specific association must be done in the registry because Windows doesn't have an easy way to do it (we hope to have a better way to associate files from the program itself, but the action would not be different).

Another alternative is drag-and-dropping the file from the file explorer to the Aseprite window, this method works on Windows and macOS.

not the most helpful, but thanks. This involves trying to mess around with my computers system, namely the registry. I was more or less asking if it was an option I overlooked in the program itself, so if a new instance is created while the old one is there it will just make a new tab instead. Altering registry is a bit dangerous.

Registry editing is only dangerous if you don't pay attention to what you're doing. Also that thread explains the issue and why you won't find a solution within Aseprite itself, since it's your operating system that isn't behaving as you prefer.

If you want a simpler and safer solution, just use File>Open.

Simple not so much. Since hitting open will open up the folder I'm working in. If I need to grab it of the desktop I'd have to navigate there, and then eventually back to the folder I'm working in. It breaks the work flow a little. Thank you for your help though, all I needed to know was that it wasn't in the program itself. I'll just have to open both with Aseprite, open a tab in the first, and copy paste from the 2nd instance.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Oh wow I didn't know about the drag and drop. That is a ton better. now i don't have to sort through various folders trying to open files, or making new tabs from multiple instances. Between this and just learning you can use multiplications in canvas sizes, I swear this is the best art program out there. Thank you so much.

Why can I do this in photoshop without messing with the registry? I'd really like this feature to be added.

Hello Necro poster. The drag and drop method works wonderfully. So I'm happy with that.

I want to open png's from the Unity editor. With Photoshop I can simply double-click them in Unity and they open in a new Photoshop tab. With Asesprite if I used the drag-drop method I'd have to right-click them then click "show in explorer", then drag and drop, then close that new file explorer window.

This is still currently an issue in Aseprite v1.3-rc1-x64
Whenever I double click a .aseprite file it opens a new editor

Edit: Nevermind the way I fixed this was by going to Settings>Apps>DefaultApps> and unassigning and reassigning Aseprite as the default app.
