Hello, new to Aseprite! I have always drawn pen and paper but now im exploring digital
I am super curious (surprise surprise) about pixel art!

Now, I dont know any thing in and out about resolutions and such but I was wanting to know what is the common resolution that you would make your canvas for pixel art similar to that of OwlBoy and the likes? Really high depth pixel art but it obviously looks retro?

Thanks in advance!

Owl Boy is drawn at 640x360

The base resolution of Owlboy is 640x360. Otus stands at a height of 39 pixels. The resolution of your canvas depends on how much detail you want to actually draw out. Common canvas resolutions are 16x16 and 32x32, although you can change it to make it fit your needs. It really depends on how much time you're willing to take to draw and how much effort you want to put into doing it.

Would you happen to know the sizes for Undertale/Deltarune? Like if I wanted to make a character sprite like Toriel, would it be like 16x16 or 32x32 or whatever?

Check out https://www.spriters-resource.com/

You can open up any of these sprites in Aesprite. You can check their size simply by using the rectangular marquee tool and looking at the counter on the bottom left of Aesprite.

Awesome, I see some Undertale sprites on there-- do you think those are taken straight from the game?

Like this one? If I load that and check one of the frames, that'll be the size canvas that was certainly used to make the sprite?

Those games render at 640x480. If I remember correctly, Toriel is 49 pixels tall and sans is 30 tall. The sprite sizes themselves vary. The normal 16x16 and 32x32 recommendations are used more for tilesets. You can use any size canvas for pixel art (as long as it isn't gigantic if it's going into a small window for a game). It depends on how much time and effort you want to put into your sprites.

Oh that's kinda confusing to get my head around at first. I get anxious about little specific things like those sizes and such, hopefully that goes away at some point when I understand stuff better. Thanks! :>
