Don't think I've ever used RMXP myself, but I have used RMMV. PNG is probably the correct format, but there's other details like size and aspect ratio and file naming conventions to be aware of. In terms of PNG, you just need to make sure you either use alpha-channel or whatever hex-code color that engine erases (since some older engines used to do that instead of reading alpha-channel)
I see. Thank you! Long story short, I want to make my own RPG just for fun and I want to do it right. I've learned that Asesprite sprites can be imported into RPG Maker XP, but I haven't found much resources on that. I'll ask around in their forum too.
All I know is to use 32x32 sized sprites for characters and to import PNG files. Beyond that, I'm having trouble making them work.
Thanks again for sharing your insight with me!
If you're that serious about your project, then reading through all the documentation for RMXP is probably worth your while. In the RMMV docs, there was a very long page dedicated just to asset specifications and it covered everything from audio to visual, like how single character sprite sheets have '!' prepended to the file name when importing to the database and how we needed ogg vorbis audio for one set of machines while m4a audio was needed for another. All those tricky details should be included in documentation and it's better to locate that documentation for RMXP rather than ask the Internet each time you need to reference something, otherwise you'll never get anything done.
Best of luck to ya~
