How do you animate Fire? I'm struggling big time :(

I'm trying to do a projectile - fire breathing some sort but I cant animate it at all..it just looks bland/bad :/

first plan out the movement with primitive shapes

then on another layer start adding fire onto it long and short streaks of orange
then yellow following the orange

set the fire layer to addition/overlay/whatever works

and adjust as necessary
