It may feel like cheating, but you would be surprised how many professional artists use references. Don't feel like you have to do everything the hard way! The only reason you should be careful about copying other artists' work is if you are making money off of it, and, even then, there is nothing wrong with being similar if you are doing it in your own way.
Another thing that will help is just doing it, thats dumb and generic advice I know but I started out not knowing ANYTHING back on MS Paint and over the years I've gotten a lot better to the point where I can make animated art. So don't worry about lack of experience, you will get better. But that comes with time, so what you can do now is watch this series of videos, they help immensely with understanding pixel art and art in general.
