Aseprite Vs Pyxel Edit
How does Aseprite compare to Pyxel Edit?

I picked up the latter recently and it seems to be okay, but lacking some features - and some of it seems complex even for basic things, especially for animation.

They're both similar prices and I suppose I could could fork out for Aseprite if it's significantly better.

Any advice?

I have both and use them for different reasons, I like Asesprite for doing props, characters and animations for stuff. Pyxel Edit I was using more for tilesets.
Though I have seen on twitter than the creator of Asesprite was working on some tilemap stuff so that area might improve soon!
I guess it depends on what you are trying to do with it, but both are great choices IMO, and I frequently still use both.

Just like Trash Mammal, I use both for the same reasons. The tools to make tilesets in Pyxel Edit is it's strong point, but I feel Aseprite is a better all-round tool for pixel art and animation.
I also see the developer for Aseprite is very active and open to what's in the works to make it even better.
