Aseprite

Convert sprite sheets to layers? Why can't Asprite do this and vice versa? Or did I miss something?
See, RPG Maker uses sprite sheets. This means the character is animated from left to right (or like a pendulum, going from 1, 2, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3, etc..). Aseprite uses layers to show animations, and it's downright difficult (if not impossible) to convert a sprite sheet to this format within Aseprite. Unless I have missed something?

I am more accustomed to paint.net, which I have used for years. I could use paint.net to get the individual frames and paste them into Aseprite, and then later convert them back into sprite sheets when I am pleased with the final results. This is a really complicated process though. Is there really no "convert sprite sheet to layers" (and vice versa) in Aseprite?

It also bothers me that there can't be different layers for the sprite, as well as the layers for the animation. Some of my sprites have alternate hair, expressions, etc.. that must be kept in different layers. I wish Aseprite had been designed with image layers AND frames in mind.

Hi there PaladinHeart, sorry but I'm a little confused, in the Timeline ( https://www.aseprite.org/docs/timeline/ ) you can handle layers and frames as different concepts.

You can have multiple layers, and multiple frames, and each cel is a little image in a layer/frame intersection. Then you can export your sprite with several layers/frames/animations/tags to a sprite sheet using File > Export Sprite Sheet.

Thanks! I see now that there is also an "import sprite sheet" option as well, which will really help a lot. I'm glad to know that layers and frames are handled differently as well. I'm still learning the program so it will probably take me a bit to figure it all out.

Edit: By the way, is there a way to move the selection box without altering what is inside the selection? This is less necessary now that I know how to import a sprite sheet, but could still be useful to know (if possible).
