tracing high resolution with 1x1 pixels

is there a good way that I can trace something that is hires, but have my trace only be a 1x1?

Let's say I have a 512x512 image and I'd like to make a pixel version of it --approximating things and giving it a 'blocky" look. If I resize the 512x512 to be 32x32 I lose all detail, then tracing is kind of useless. BUT if I could see a higher resolution of it but overlay my 1x1 pixels on top of it so that it is the same size, then that would be incredibly useful!

can it be done?

There is a recent feature just for this purpose, actually.

Go to Layer > Add Reference Layer

I used it myself to do some GIF rotoscoping, it's quite fun!

figured it out.. needed to download v1.2 beta 9 - you can do it through Humble and Steam
