I'm not exactly sure what you mean but you can turn the grid on from View -> Show -> Grid. You can edit the grid settings from View -> Grid.

in the grid settings you can change the size and using Shift + G you can toggle grid on and off.

nowadays the shortcut is ctrl+apostrophe. Shift+g will activate the gradient tool
