Is anyone else having this problem, the computer pops up with a message that reads "previous launch unsuccessful would you like to start the game in safe mode".

Me too. I launched it in safe mode (1024* 768) and it runs very well. It's very fast. Later I'll try another resolution

turn off advanced physx , that will give you a big frame rate boost , if you have an older cpu that just barely meets min req. set physx to gpu in nvidia control panel , not familiar with ati there might be a simular option , run the game in dx10

I have just fixed my Metro 2033 crash. When I started Metro 2033 I got a pop up. It said something about last starting of Metro 2033 was unsuccesful, do you want to start in safe mode Yes/No. Whichever I click, it acted like it was going to start but almost imeadiately crashed. There was the usual program not working do you wish to close the program type message.

It was to do with PhysX installation. Mine had got corrupted. I was sure of this because it when I checked in GPU-Z it didn't show PhysX as checked. However it appeared installed when I checked re-installing drivers and PhysX.

I identified my installed PhysX version. (Easy done.) Open Nvidia control panel > click 'Help' (up at the top) > choose 'System Information' > click the 'Components' tab. There is the PhysX version you have installed.

Then I googled PhysX. I downloaded the same version, coz mine was the latest. Clicked to install that PhysX version, "chose the remove option". (It was very fast.) Then clicked to install PhysX again, and this time installed it. (Again very fast.)

Metro 2033 - fixed.....!
