Thoughout the whole game, the Dark Ones are trying to communicate with you and not kill you, it's only when they are attacked is when they attack. Not to mistake them with the "usual tunnel trash" which actually want to kill you.

Basically not. Humanity is almost wiped out and living on the edge twenty years after the nuclear war, and is in serious danger of being completely wiped out from the earth cause of the relentless mutant attacks and wars fought in the Metro. The dark ones are trying to reach out a hand and help ♥♥♥♥ sapiens in their struggle for survival. So I would say no, they are not evil.

I prefer the ending and the answer to that question open to interpretation...keeps the mysterious vibe and also fills in plot holes such as...if the Dark Ones were wholley good, why were there rooms filled with soldiers in the beginning with broken minds? Also, the horror you experience with Bourbon? Was this an unintended side effect of them trying to communicate? Are their good Dark Ones and bad Dark Ones? Was it the Ghosts and other horrors of the Metro that destroyed the minds of those men? This is the kind of discussion that would have been fun to carry on IMO if Last Light had gone another way with the story...I believe thats why the canon ending written by Dmitry had Artyom destroying them, never for us to truely know the mystery of the Dark Ones...

And then Last Light happened and you babysat for 12 hours.

There is a hint in the books and maybe the game if I remember right. They want the humans to build technology while the dark ones protect and do the parts the humans can't. Sort of like a yin and yang.. but its speculated to be a "nice" enslavement to the dark ones if beyond human comprehension a bit.

There is actually a very good explanation I've heard. Most people view the Dark Ones as enemy ("If it's hostile, you kill it") and rightly so because it broke many's minds - but that may be because of incompatible between human and their minds. However Artyom was first time outside Exhibition (notice all the "moral" points are Artyom exeriencing new things, including the bong) so his view is more open, plus the Dark One was trying a less-devastating way of communication - showing him different illusions through out the game.
