What do you do if you run out of filters?
I'm in the city of the dead or whatever and I keep dying.

You may not like this answer, but you obviously play this game wrong... You need to explore all possible area for ammo, filters, ect. If you just go and shoot, that won't work. You need to keep looking for filters while you playing. There are tons of them, more than enough, especially on the surfice. Search the dead bodies, boxes, everything.
Also you can help yourself if you restart the game from the Market level and buy as many filters as you can. So you won't need more for a while.

I was picking up filters. I explore everything. I somehow magically found another filter in an obscure area right before I was about to suffocate in fact I died during the transisition to the next level but apparently the game is okay with that and just let me proceed. Hopefully after I get past this god forsaken enemy part there's a place to buy some filters and i'll buy a bunch.

That's really stupid how you need such an extreme amount.

yeah, this game can be pretty unforgiving. It took me two tries to finish it (forgot stealth suit, not enough filters/ammo, etc)

How can you not find filters? They're everywhere! You can even buy them. If you want to save money, my strategy is to keep 50 rounds for the pistol, 100 rounds for the auto machine gun, and 50 for the helsing which you can find on the first level with Bourbon. If you trade in the helsing at the market you can recieve 120 bullets in exhange for the air rifle with a sniper scope. All of which you can use for filters. This strategy is for Rnager Hardcore.

Never flat out buy a gun in the metro, only take what you need throughout the whole game. Use throwing knives to take out things like lamps and people if a silenced pistol is unavailable.

Ok I never had any problems with gas masks until now... I was running out of gas masks and were looking for some and thought, well I have enough time plenty of them around right?

But I was unlucky and somehow managed to get to a checkpoint RIGHT before dying. I mean I've already taken the gas mask of and now are stumbling around holding my breath trying to find a gas mask. And right after the checkpoint is a little scene where some russian guys start talking to me so I cannot really continue because the door does not open. I always die before the even stop talking... and after loading again I'm right back there, without breath, and 10 seconds to go before dying...

I mean it's OK if a game is hard and makes you die a lot. It is NOT ok if there is no way to recover from your mistakes, and it's ESPECIALLY not ok if there are only automatic save points so if you screw up you have to start from beginning - serious design flaw in the game...

reload the level from the level select screen.

Are you talking about the library? There should have been a gas mask in the sewer at the beginning of the level

Just restart the current chapter, and try to be more carefull.

On my first playthrough there was an area where I kept dying from lack of filters. No problem. The game will randomly place filters, and you should be able to find enough to get through eventually.
U SHOULD START OVER FROM BEGING AND SAVE MONEY FOR A LOT OF FILTERS AT THE MARKET LEVEL
ONCE I HAD LIKE 45 FILTERS
DIEING WITHOUT FILTERS IS A BAD WAY TO DIE
UD BE FROZEN STIFF AND HAVE A BLUE FACE
LIKE THOSE OTHER GUYS IN PARTS 1 AND 2
