Metro 2033 has completely bricked my monitor.
I tried to launch the game the other day as I hadn't played in a while as as soon as it loaded my monitor showed the message "not optimum mode" the menu was inaccessible and no keyboard shortcuts proved useful. I've had my PC connected to the TV for the past few days since and I tried it again today facing the same problem. The monitor is a Samsung 500001. Any advice is appreciated.

in this Universe NO sync master 943, only 943N, NW but it have 8000:1

A game can not brick a monitor. The game itself doesn't have any access to the monitor, only the APIs like DirectX. If your monitor died while you started the game for the first time, it's just a coincidence.

It's (a bit simplified): Game --> DirectX ---> Driver ---> Videocard ---> Monitor.

well i know bricked isn#t the right term, i was just in a worry and didn't want to find the right word. any time i hook it up to the pc it just gives me the "not optimum mode" ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ after the motherboard splash screen finishes. And it could be coincidence but it happened immediately after the game launched.

Well, that only shows that the monitor is still working fine, otherwise it wouldn't show the splash screen of your mainboard. So something else is broken.
Wouldn't be surprised it's the videocard.

I'd suggest looking on the back of the monitor for the S/N sticker. It should list the serial number and model number and where it was made and blah, blah, blah.

Does it list a different model number than what you see on the front of your monitor? If you can find the exact model number, you might be able to find a user manual online to see if there's a way to factory reset the monitor or you can even search easier for similar issues for your model number online and how to possible fix it.

I used to have a Samsung Syncmaster 226CW (younger brother uses it now). If I remember correctly there are 3 different models for the 226. The CW (what I had), the BW and one more, but it eludes me at the moment. The sticker on the back of the monitor (located near the video inputs and power plug) gives the S/N and the model number.

I had the monitor for about 7 years when the screen started flickering when powering on from a cold boot. The image on monitor would also randomly go black while it was being used - the monitor was still getting power, but the image on the screen would go out. I would have to press the power button off and back on to get the image to come back up. I ended up replacing the capacitors on the power board for the monitor (5 were bulging really bad) and after that, no more issues.

As for the "no optimum mode" that usually comes up when the resolution or refresh rate exceeds what the monitor can handle. Usually this means windows is trying to run a resolution or refresh rate your monitor cannot make use of and you need to change it.

If you cannot get into windows to change things, I would suggest you boot into Safe Mode (usually if you spam F8 as your computer starts, you should get a menu to come up asking how you want to start your computer - pick Safe Mode). It should hopefully load you into windows. Once you're in there, uninstall your video driver and then reboot your computer. Doing this should force the video image to default to 800x600 (or something around that range). Then download and install the necessary video driver for your GPU.

My guess is your TV is 1080p and your monitor doesn't support it - which is why you ran into this problem when launching the game when connected to your monitor. But, this is just a guess since I don't know the native resolution of your TV and your monitor.

cheers for the advice. my tv is 1768 x 992, but what confuses me is it used to run perfectly fine on the monitor when i first got the game and i don't see why it should be any different now. the only thing i can think of is what cathulhu said about the video card. This PC is secondhand as i needed a pc immediately after my other one died. every time i've gone to clean it out i can't remove the card for some reason (yes the bracket is unscrewed and the latch is pushed down before anyone says anything) so i think the previous owner may have mishandled it and "forgot" to mention that. I'm trying to save money to build a new pc (including a monitor in the budget) so i guess i'll just wait until then. i'm perfectly okay with having the pc hooked up to the tv, i just realy am annoyed this has happened is all..

Change the game settings in the game config file, or delete the config file and re-launch the game on the Monitor. Sounds like it has wrong resolution coming up, due to what was available on your TV when you used that before. If still has issues, connect a display you can get working, just for Windows Desktop, then DDU out your GPU Drivers, power down once they are all removed. Then connect the Monitor and clean install GPU Drivers.
