I've heard good things about 'Roadside Picnic,' as well as the 1979 movie 'Stalker' based on the same.

Haven't read slash watched them myself yet, though.

A Metro movie is in the works.

Could you provide proof, though?

The original creator of Metro series, Dmitry Glukhovsky, already confirmed it was in preproduction. This isn't exactly news as he released a statement about it months ago and buzz has already been around the Metro forums.

“My novel and I have been waiting for this to happen for the last 10 years,” said Glukhovsky. “I have previously been extremely careful about handing my ‘baby’ over to Hollywood producers for adaption for a feature film, but now I feel that it has landed in the right hands. De Luca and L’Heureux have a great vision for this project, and I feel it’s an honor to work with them.”

Similar? Well, that depends on which themes you liked from the game. Atmosphere? Apocalyptic? Survival? I enjoy these themes myself, so I would probably recommend movies like Andrej Tarkovskij's 'Stalker', which in itself inspired the Stalker-games. Or the atmospheric movie 'The Road', which is great by itself, no matter the preference of theme. Or I could go as far as recommending 'Dreaming of Paradise', a danish cartoon from 1987 about people being forced to live underground. Depends on which themes you like. :)

Edit: Apparently the comments didn't load up for me, so I had no idea that there were replies already. I can see that someone already recommended 'Stalker' and I thought of 'Roadside Picnic' as well. 'Stalker' isn't for everyone though - it's very slow, poetic and philosophical.
