4A released a tech demo for Metro Exodus' use of Nvidia's RTX raytracing tech. This will replace the default ambient occlusion and refraction methods. No tensor cores currently in use, replaces the current AO and GI methods, no word on reflections: http://www.4a-games.com.mt/4a-dna/2018/3/22/nvidia-reveals-collaboration-with-4a-games-on-rtx-technology-at-gdc-2018

Story
This follows Artyom after Last Light's "enlightened" ending and shares some story content with the 2035 novel. It also follows their prior sentiment of a "story driven, less linear" experience, here is the summary:

"Metro Exodus is an epic, story-driven first person shooter from 4A Games that blends deadly combat and stealth with exploration and survival horror in one of the most immersive game worlds ever created. Explore the Russian wilderness across vast, non-linear levels and follow a thrilling story-line that spans an entire year through spring, summer and autumn to the depths of nuclear winter. Inspired by the novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro Exodus continues Artyom’s story in the greatest Metro adventure yet"

There are 4 large free-roam maps, one for each season. Each of these are about 10x bigger than the biggest level from Last Light, the swamp. These are connected through smaller, more linear levels.

Here’s a list of features provided by Deep Silver:
  • Embark on an incredible journey – board the Aurora, a heavily modified steam locomotive, and join a handful of survivors as they search for a new life in the East
  • Experience Sandbox Survival – a gripping story links together classic Metro gameplay with new huge, non-linear levels
  • A beautiful, hostile world – discover the post-apocalyptic Russian wilderness, brought to life with stunning day / night cycles and dynamic weather
  • Deadly combat and stealth – scavenge and craft in the field to customize your arsenal of hand-made weaponry, and engage human and mutant foes in thrilling tactical combat
  • Your choices determine your comrades’ fate – not all your companions will survive the journey; your decisions have consequence in a gripping storyline that offers massive re-playability
  • The ultimate in atmosphere and immersion – a flickering candle in the darkness; a ragged gasp as your gasmask frosts over; the howl of a mutant on the night wind – the game will immerse and terrify you like no other

There is no more ammo based currency but now crafting materials and chemicals can be collected to change and improve your arsenal.

Executive producer John Bloch who states “The story starts in Moscow and you play as Artyom and it picks up from Metro: Last Light’s enlightened ending,” Bloch said. “That is canon. It doesn’t pick up directly, but as far as the two endings, it’s canon.”

Bloch added that players will eventually leave Moscow and embark on a journey across a post-apocalyptic Russia. As they make their way through into unfamiliar settings, they’ll encounter familiar faces from previous games in the series.

“We're not saying who joins just yet but there will be a lot of fan favorite characters.... There’s large levels that offer a lot more freedom, they’re non-linear, but we will have a story wrapped into them. So the story will carry through across the non-linear and linear levels”. Bloch then goes on to explain that because of this, the game is “not exactly an open-world” in the traditional sense.

Interview with Bloch here[gamerant.com]
These cities will also be filled with things to do. Bloch says that “the mix of classic Metro gameplay with these new sandbox environments provide a lot more freedom and options to the player while still maintaining what we think makes our previous games so enjoyable.”

Players will “encounter new societies, religions, ways of life, environments, monsters, and mutants. Some will seem familiar in some ways and some will be completely new.”

Bloch even reveals that the game’s script is “larger than both Metro 2033‘s and Metro: Last Light‘s scripts combined, including all DLC.”

Technical
System Requirements: http://metrothegame.com/PCSpecs/

There is a big expansion on the types of modifications available for weapons. Minor modifications can be swapped without being at a shopkeeper. The game will support physically-based rendering and will come with an overhauled lighting system. Metro Exodus also will feature full facial capture for cinematics, a dynamic weather system, full day/night cycles, atmospheric systems and sim AI biomes.

The game supports DX12, DX11, Tessellation, Physx, and Hairworks. There is also a shader slider to increase or decrease aliasing to tune the GPU load.

Metro Exodus will be using Nvidia's RTX raytracing platform which is Nvidia's implementation of Microsoft’s new DirectX Raytracing API (DXR). This will an optional replacement for certain lighting features. So far ray tracing has been stated to be used for Ambient Occlusion and Global Illumination. There are no other stated graphical techniques utilizing RTX.

AMD is planning on also planning on their own implementation of DXR as well as tensor computing support, whether or not this will be seamless between architectures on Exodus is not yet known. A 4A programmer is stating that with decent BVH algorithms and fast memory, Raytracing is feasible on non RTX hardware.

There is ultra widescreen support. Consoles are 30FPS. Xbox One X version using using adaptive vsync at 4K/30FPS in full HDR.

And yes, you can see Artyom's legs this time around :metromask:

General Stability fixes
Optimization for Lower spec PC's
DLSS fixes and improvements to sharpness
Fixed wallmark vfx for DX11
RTX fixes and optimization
Added bugtrap support for reporting crashes to 4A Games
Benchmark tool fixes

Additional info:
The new bugtrap tool will detect a crash or other fatal error that may occur in the PC version. It will gather some limited data from your machine and prepare a report that you can send to 4A Games via the Metro Support site. No user identifiable information is collected, but the report can be fully reviewed before sending.

For controller lag reports on PC – If you have a high spec machine capable of running at high framerate, but have vsync in half, you will likely experience controller lag issues. The larger the difference between the possible framerate of a machine, and the vsync setting, the more lag you may experience. Please switch vsync to off or full to reduce these chances. We are continuing to investigate this issue.

The DLC roadmap has been released:
Coming in Summer 2019, the first story that players will follow, The Two Colonels, is that of Colonel Khlebnikov, just below the surface, under the dead city of Novosibirsk, as he makes his way home to his son, Kirill, for New Year’s Eve.

Coming in early 2020 is Sam’s Story, a brand new sandbox survival level based on Vladivostok. Sam, a US marine at the Moscow embassy before the bombs were dropped, has long dreamed of returning to his homeland, and maybe finding his family alive. The prospect seemed impossible in the darkened tunnels of the Metro, but when the Spartans discovered that Moscow was not the only city left alive after the war, holding out hope didn’t feel so foolish anymore.
