How long is left?

I'm a few hours past taking over the prison. I've got about 35 hours in and I'm wondering how much is left. I kind of want to finish this before I play Tales of Arise, but I'm also having issues grinding through with the slower walking speed and how slowly the story unfolds.

Should I beat this first?

You may be close to half the game actually, but that second half would be more fast paced. Don't know if you have unlocked the geo plank (it will make you move a lot faster) and in term of grinding you should push and use the last dungeon to lvl up.
There is still some huge plot twist that will blow your mind and I recommend you that you give it your time.
But also, Tales of Arise is a very engaging -more straigthforward- story that will you keep more easily engaged.

Second part is not faster. its full of backtracking and they put the destinations far away as possible for no reason except to make you waste time on walking back and forward all the time.

You are halfway. A single tales game usually take 60-80 hours to complete on average. But may be faster or slower depending on the player's progress speed as well.
