Seriously? How do I switch characters in the menu?

I can't switch characters in the menu. The game says I can use the Space Bar to do it, but all it does is bring up the character's stats. Can someone please tell me how to do that.

Open menu, choose character, then refer to the button guide at the bottom and replace the first slot with a different character. I'm not sure what the keyboard button is.

Perhaps I wasn't being clear. What I'm referring to is the battle formation. I want my party to consist of Velvet, Laphicet, Eizen and Magilou. But the game shoved Eizen in the back with Rokurou and I'm stuck using Eleanor.

Battle formation...? Any screenshot or something? I still dont quite get your problem.
If you mean your combat party, you just make sure first four characters slots on the left are the ones that you wanted, and the 2 extra party members will be shoved aside as backup. You just change their position

you go to the menu, and whatever button is next to "formation" press that, and the character icon/banner should move upwards, then you move to the character(s) you want to replace them with and press that same button and they will swap places.

the characters on the four left slots will be who you take into battle

Go into the controls, find the button for menu under outside of battle and under menu find pause/cancel. They should be the same button so change one to a different button not in use.

I doubt the OP waited all that time before continuing the playthrough.
