cast is mostly interesting (except Rokurou), the plot is interesting although the big plot twist felt really obvious to me..
Combat is pretty good (far better than Zestiria), granted I do prefer the old TP based battle systems (god i miss jumping)..
overall its an okay title, not the best in the franchise but certainly far from the worst..
after Zestiria I actually somewhat worrited that they could not make an interesting entry to the series now that Wolf Team disbanded, but Berseria helped restore some of that faith
That is good enough for me, I beat Zestiria and I honestly didn't think it was as good as other Tales entries. By far my favorite is Symphonia. I have played all but Xillia but I heard that one is pretty boring.
I am excited to dive into this game then, I was mostly worried that the main character would be the weakest part of this entry. I hope I am wrong!
Xillia's main gripe is the plot falls apart a bit in the last hour or two of gameplay (they cut an arc and instead used it as a basis for the sequel), but up until that point its actually really good with a great combat system (i'd go as far as to say one of the best)..
comes down to personal taste I guess.. to some people that last tiny section of the game spoils the journey, but up until that point its a pretty great title..
a wonder that overcomes its flaws imho..
if you ever try it though, pick Jude as the protagonist.. Milla's path skips a few very important events that are quite important to the story..
I actually half wonder if the people who said Xillia is a poor title tried Milla's path their first run..
I have been holding out for a PC release of Xillia but that is taking forever or it just isn't going to happen. (They did Symphonia so here is to hoping it will)
I will take your word on it since you seem like a cool dude who knows what hes talking about.
Although honestly the Collectors Edition for both games looks good...
Guess my shelf could use some more boxes.
You can find a lot of similaries and reference here and there.
I appreciate the heads up tho! Looking forward to references and easter eggs.
I agree! I am finding that with this title it is keeping me engaged the whole time. The last few titles I have played recently, most notably Zestiria..it had long tedious and boring zones/areas. Berseria is avoiding that at least in the 18 hours or so I have recorded. A gripe I am having is with the random mobs in the world. Most notably the ones that teleport infront of you...that is so annoying.
Sad to say it though but the tales team needs to work on their story writing... They truy know how to write characters but their storylines utilize some tropes that could be implemeted better... Like in abyss guy being afraid of women because all of his maids died on him... or Largo being Natalia's dad those character stories were very good... But, going back to it I feel like it's lacking in the storyline itself and so is Berseria ... Again, Berseria is a good game just not the best Tales game... I suggest you pick up Abyss, and Vesperia
I also thought the music was pretty good (after finishing the game anyway)
There were a few things I didn't like as much though, such as the dungeons and the simple-ish combat. I liked Vesperia and Xillia's combat much better.
But yeah, despite everything I didn't like about Berseria, it's still my favorite game in the series with Vesperia as an extremely close second.
Wow we started in the exact same order when it comes to Tales games! I also agree in the regard that these characters are a deeper cast then in Zestiria, the story also seems more mature to me. I think the best part of Zestiria was Edna and Rose, outside of that the rest of the cast was meh. The only Tales game I have yet to finish is Vesperia. I don't know why I just can't do it but Abyss is one of my favs. I have played the majority if not all of the entries.
I can almost completely agree with your likes/dislikes! I just can not deal with the English Dubs in Tales games. Don't get me wrong, Berseria is by far the most talented English cast (Eizen and Velvet as standouts) but it just doesn't compare to the Japanese cast. Maybe I am just biased because I have taken 5 years of Japanese classes so I don't have to read the subtitles. I can understand if you are not fluent in the language how that can be a turn off.
The combat in this game can be frustrating. Especially if you are using a mouse and keyboard and going against opponents who move a lot, its hard to hit the target repeatedly.
Overall I really really enjoyed the darker story and the deeper cast. I also liked the tie in and cameos from Berseria to Zestiria. It was fun :)
