there is also Tales of Symphonia (takes place in a different universe, but still the same franchise), which many consider the best game in the franchise (although some argue against it).. granted, Symphonia may feel slightly dated to newcomers
But other than that, I would just say the closest thing to Berseria is other Tales games. Story wise, Symphonia is pretty good (not nearly as dark as Berseria) and the most popular Tales game but the gameplay might feel a bit dated since the game released before they implemented free run. It's also the first 3D Tales game.
If you have consoles other than PC then there's Tales of the Abyss, Vesperia, Xillia, Xillia 2, and Graces F. Abyss and Vesperia are fantastic games all around, Xillia and Xillia 2 are kind of hit or miss, but most people love them.
do you know of any games that have the same combat mechanis as tales of berseria?
Most of JRPG games out there are turned based.
I do heard of the "Star Ocean" series has a similar combat system. But that game is console only.
I only wish the creator wasn't so stuck on Sony's platform. Star Ocean would thrive so much on PC. Especially if he managed to at least go back to End of Time combat style. New game's battles I find to be a bit limiting for what is supposed to be such an extremely exaggerated combat style that still had a lot of levels of finesse back in its day. Though a 2D style Nino Kuni 2 type art style and grand world explorational type game would be insane for a Star Ocean game <3
Sorry, got off track.
Tales of Symphonia is sadly still the best alternative we have. While I did find Zestiria on PC and PS4 a bit lacking it can be enjoyable? It certainly does have much more character skits than Beseria, though combat system literally becomes rock paper scissors later in the game. Not the most interesting playstyle for a Tales game but it can be fun.
Recommened titles:
Tales of Symphonia, Hyper Neptunia 1-3 and Mega Dimensions, Atelier Firis (this one is a lot of fun despite yet again PC players being treated like third class gamers.)
If you have *would like* I could help you with setting up an emulator to play the Star Ocean games. God I've bought that game at least 3 times despite trading them in for other rpgs like FF 9 and Chrono Cross after having beaten it so many times. lol
Emulators are sadly mandatory these days given companies seem to refuse our cries for PC jrpg releases. That and sadly Japanese devs just seem wholly ignorant and stuck in their ways when it comes to releasing games mostly on consoles because they can't seem to program for PC worth a damn a good majority of the time. Shamco and Keico Tecmo (especially) being prime examples where the community is stuck with having to fix a company's game of horrible pc killing bugs. xD
I think my one dream at this point is having a Steam handheld that's very much like the Switch but can pull some sweet 2540x1440p levels of power. With expandable battery slot for third-parties to work with! (I prefer gaming on the go.)
And no, Nvidia Shield is just god awful. Just, no. That would be a beast of a machine. Especially if you can do what Samsung and Nintendo are doing with docking the system to play on TV when you want.
lol Mornings. I ramble too much. But yes, tons of great RPGs like Mana Khemia 1 and 2 (part of the Atelier series), the Tales games like Eternia which is one of my top favs, and many more like Kodelka which is the pre-quel to PS2's amazing Shadow Hearts game (2 and 3 is a mixed bag as they were heavily watered down from the original's dark themes for mainstreamers.) and too many more to get into right now!
Honestly though, Tales of Symphonia is the best option to get a similar experience. If you happen to have something that can play a GBA cartridge lying around though, Tales of Phantasia is another good option so long as you can forgive old gameplay (and a few incredibly cheap deaths).
can't comment on the iOS or PSP versions as I haven't played all the way through them
While Tales and Star Ocean are really close, I think I can reccomend an action RPG at least that you can get on Steam and is not related to those other series.
You might want to give the Ys series a try.
I reccomend Ys: The Oath in Felghana
