Learning to soul burst to heal is key, and keeping an eye on your party memebers is key as well. The harder the difficulty, the more the AI ganks up on your party members, and a single KO can destroy your grade result.
Also, Dire Foes are constant in regions. As you progress through the game and get to newer areas, you'll encounter some different Dire Foes, but it's always a Hanged Man with 2 mobs, or a Killer Wasp with 2 mobs and so forth.
Running might seem worth it, but you have to understand that it resets your grade multiplier, your bottle (dark or holy) and you don't get any rewards from the battle you just fought (exp, gald, grade and items are all going down the drain).
The safest way to beat those dire foes is to tell your team to focus on defending and go for it with either Velvet or Rokurou.
Telling your allies to defend usually lets them not get hit much and they like to put distance with the enemies, and those two characters can reliably down a boss solo with good use of their soul break.
Weapon and accessory are ok but not that important, boots, armour and rings are very much the difference between living and dying in those dangerous encounters.
+10 armour gives 50% stagger reduction, +10 ring gives 90% stun time reduction and +10 boots give 500 HP each time you do a timed side step.
Obviously, the extras from having a lot of enhancement levels equipped do help too.
For those that find that they too easily kill your multipliers, a good alternative to dangerous encounters is dark bottles, as it spawns reinforcements without boosting enemies themselves, giving you good drop chances and better exp, gald and grade than normal encounters too.
