Like, Velvet is the biggest damage dealer for sure, but if the enemies has high defence and her hidden artes are a bad match with the resistances she's not going to do much.
Same with Magilou, it really doesn't matter if she can deal any damage, that spell absorber is the only thing that's gonna keep you alive against some enemies.
But seriously, its all personal preference really, especially since at some point in the game you learn switch blasts which at the cost of 1 BG allows you to switch out a character for any of the sub characters at any time.
The one thing i will note though is if you facing a group of casters or a boss caster, you'll definately want everyones favorite witch, the mighty and awesome Magilou in the party as her Break soul eats casters for dinner (literally, as she eats/absorbs their spells then unleashes a super spell back at them)
Eleanor also learns a resurrect spell called life at level 40 which revives, heals and cures all stat reductions in a small area
Party composition may be conditional in the battle or personal preference, but I found my best clock defeating boss/dire foe when my party is Velvet+Rokurou+Eleanor+Laphicet
I wouldnt exactly call someone whose comboes take him all over the battlefield, a one target close combat specialist :P
But yes you definately would want a mix but with the party switch system, you can always mix back and forth depending on the situation, so if you say have Magi in and Laphi on the bench, and your team starts to take a beating, you can switch the 2 so Laphi can start to heal etc.
Me personally, my main party of choice is Eleanor, Velvet, Laphi and Magi with me controlling either Velvet or Eleanor depending on my mood(cept boss fights where i mostly control Velvet if things start to get hairy)
Velvet and Eleanor are both decent close range attackers, Laphi and Mag, are both long range casters. Both Laphi and Eleanor can heal plus Eleanor also has some decent mid range artes as well. Magi eats any and all casters for lunch and dinner etc but constantly switch in and out Eizen and Roku depending on situation.
