velvet combo help
So I'm starting to try to use elemental weaknesses against certain enemies. I just got attacked by the pirates and '2nd' is now part of my party. I'm fighting against spiders, scorpions and seed things.

This is what I have so far.

The top combo was what I was thinking about using. Does that seem okay? Honestly I'm not sure what I should be picking for any of these other than use an elemental weakness somewhere.

Any help would be appreciated!

Infernal torrentx4, slag attackx4 and shell splitterx4 are the top 3 most skills.
The last shortcut is left to adjust based on enemy weakness.
I think you can just do the combo and see which skills allow you get hit the least then set x4.

Ok, that first link showed a couple of guides, one of which was an english combo guide, except I don't have the artes listed in the combos. As for 'Infernal torrentx4, slag attackx4 and shell splitterx4, I don't know what that means XD

Only at about the same part you are myself, but so far one thing I would recommend is minimize duplication in a single vertical column. There's no real reason for it since it just limits your actions available and it's just as easy to just push A if you want to use harsh rebuttal for your 3rd move for example.

Only possible exception for skills that change functionality depending on what button you assign them to but honestly I haven't played around with that too much yet.

Slag attack hits a straight line, inflict fire/earth damage and causes stun. I use it to hit 3 enemies lined in a straight line to build souls. Can be done in medium range and not really a close range attack for me. The move also juggles enemies.
Infernal torrent hits a circular area including enemies behind Velvet, inflict fire damage and causes burn. This move also picks up downed enemies removing 'restrained' damage. While the enemy is being hit, they are juggled allowing ample time for other party members casts spell.
What I normal do is infernal torrent x 3, break soul, infernal torrent x 2 assuming I only have 3 souls. Burn status ailment would have granted me more souls to pull them off.
Shell splitter is opposing element, meaning I am able to use it when enemy is fire resistant.
For 2nd tier mystic arte is also fire based. Collecting fire based equips and title is going to increase Velvet damage. As for the 3rd mystic arte, it is harder to pull off on Chaos difficulty.
Scale crusher is also fire/water, it can also be used since the move is a ranged attack as well with Velvet shooting at a range but the move rarely hits enemy beside the target.

Since both attack is fire based together with mystic arte, equipment that increases fire damage and burning capability will make Velvet fire based. I built my party based on 1 element and their favourite moveset. If I need water damage, I would use Magilou which I focused on water based with spirit drop and tier 3 mystic arte.

As what people have said before, it is highly reccomended to not have duplicate artes on the same stage of your chain. Assuming what you said about not really understanding how the tree system works I'll explain it briefly.

Souls determine the number of actions you can have in a chain, but we'll assume you have 4 souls for your combo purposes. These actions can be made up of artes, and steps. Doing one will advance your chain blah blah blah. If you see in your arte tree though. all the arrows point to all the different buttons in the next chain and this is the reason why having duplicates in one stage is bad. So for example on your X and B button, you have tearing thorn for stage one on both buttons, and then gouging spin on one button and twin whip on another. Suppose you wanted to do Tearing thorn ---> Gouging Spin, but in another situation you wanted to do Tearing Thorn ---> Twin Whip. You have to remember you don't have to press the same button four times, so even if you had tearing thorn on only X, if you wanted to use tearing into gouging you could press X then B. Also remember that steps advance your chain as well, and it can be useful to weave these into combos and keep this in mind when stepping to avoid enemy attacks. For example you could do three steps and it would advance you into your fourth action straight away without all the artes before that. Now that we have that out of the way, I'll give you an example of my setup.

1. Gouging Spin, Rising Falcon, Harsh Rebuttal, Rising Falcon
2. Avalanche Fang, Twin Whip, Shadow Flow or Soaring Dragon (Depending on if I need cover for Amorphous type daemons and what mood I'm in, this slot changes a lot) Moonlight Cyclone, Rising Moon
3. Searing Edge, Swallow Dance, Infernal Torrent, Infernal Torrent
4. Mega Sonic Thrust, Defiant Conviction, Defiant Conviction, Defiant Conviction, Scale Crusher or Heaven's Wrath Depending on my mood or what I need for a certain situation, this changes a lot too.

Also later you get the ability to hold L1 (PS4 Pad) And press a button to do any arte anytime in your chain (This is essentially having four other trees with the same arte in all four stages) For that I have

1. Banishing Thunder
2. Slag Assault
3. Cerberus Wave
4. Water Snake's Wake

As you can see I have multiple artes in different stages, but never in the same one. My strategy in making this tree is that I rarely ever have to change it. And this tree is more about creating various combo chain scenarios which work well with each other. For example I have my Stage 1 Artes usually be gap closers or reliable starters that won't miss, and keeping in mind status effects like stun because you won't always have three or four souls to fully chain with, so these also allow me to quickly gain souls I've lost. I also like having these artes in stage one because when you have 5 souls for example, after the fourth stage, you go back to stage 1. Second stage is usually also fun and artes that setup the third stage artes well, as my third stage artes are usually more situational and high on SG cost because in most fights you start with 3 souls, etc. For the artes like Infernal Torrent and Defiant Conviction, Rising Falcon, I have these there because They are awesome artes to follow up on the arte sets before their respective stage. For anytime use artes these are my favorites that generally can combo well with anything/Start combos, all are stun and cover all elements for when I only have 2 or even 1 soul. With this setup while not the most optimal, it's very fun which matters to me the most, and It covers all weakness both elementally and type wise.

All in all though, these are just examples of how I like my setup. This game offers a TON of flexibility with the combat system so it's really up to you what you like, sorry for the wall of text. I hope this gave you at least some ideas. As for the area you're in I'm sure you're past it by now but gouging spin is extremely fast, stuns often and can start power combos against most of the daemons you'll find in that area being strong against crustaceans, so you could build off that.
